Samsung's Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra might finally replace that outdated selfie camera.

Samsung's Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra might finally replace that outdated selfie camera.

Samsung may finally be moving on from using outdated camera hardware.

Samsung has relied on the same 12MP front camera for its flagship devices for what seems like ages, leading to speculation that it might never change. However, a recent leak has sparked some optimism. Renowned leakster Ice Universe, supported by GalaxyClub, known for its accurate information on Samsung, suggests we could finally see an upgrade to the selfie camera with the upcoming Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra, and it won't just be a minor spec improvement.

The Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra are expected to introduce a brand-new 16MP front camera, potentially featuring a square sensor akin to Apple’s. Both models will also include a 50MP telephoto camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera, according to Ice Universe’s tweet from July 3, 2026.

What’s changing with the front camera?

Rumors indicate that both phones will receive a new 16MP selfie camera, and this increase in resolution indicates more than just a simple spec enhancement. As per Ice Universe, GalaxyClub hints at Samsung potentially adopting a square sensor similar to that used in the iPhone 17 series.

For those who may not know, the square sensor of the iPhone 17 series allows users to take landscape selfies even while the iPhone is held in portrait mode. This feature has been well-received by users, myself included, making it clear why Samsung would want its upcoming flagship to keep pace.

If these speculations are accurate, users will be able to capture both portrait and landscape selfies without needing to rotate their device, as the sensor can crop in either orientation from a single shot.

      What about the other cameras?

The front camera upgrade isn't the only enhancement expected. Ice Universe has independently noted that both the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra will come with a 50MP telephoto camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera.

Currently, the Galaxy S26 Ultra features a 50MP ultra-wide and a 50MP 5x telephoto camera. It's uncertain if these leaks pertain specifically to the new Pro series or if the 10MP 3x camera on the S26 Ultra will also be upgraded to a 50MP for the S27 Pro.

Of course, all of this is still in the realm of speculation, and Samsung has yet to confirm any details. However, if these reports prove true, the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra could debut as Samsung's most significant camera upgrade in years. I remain cautiously optimistic until it’s confirmed.
