Samsung's Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra may finally replace the outdated selfie camera.

Samsung may finally be moving on from reusing old camera technology.

Samsung has employed the same 12MP front camera in its flagship models for what seems like an eternity, and I was beginning to doubt it would ever change. However, a recent leak offers some optimism. According to Ice Universe, a dependable source, GalaxyClub, known for accurately predicting Samsung updates, suggests that we might get a selfie-camera upgrade in Samsung’s upcoming flagship models, the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra, and it’s not merely a spec enhancement.

The Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra are expected to feature a brand-new 16MP front camera, potentially adopting a square sensor similar to that of Apple. Each of the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will also include a 50MP telephoto camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. This information was shared by Ice Universe on July 3, 2026.

What’s changing with the front camera?

Both devices are expected to have a new 16MP selfie camera, and the increase in resolution suggests something more intriguing than just a simple spec upgrade. Ice Universe mentions that GalaxyClub hints Samsung could switch to a square sensor, much like what Apple implemented with its iPhone 17 series.

For those unfamiliar, the iPhone 17's square sensor enables users to take landscape selfies even while holding the phone in portrait mode. This feature has garnered significant appreciation from users, myself included, making it understandable why Samsung wouldn't want its next flagship to fall behind.

If these rumors are accurate, it would allow users to capture both portrait and landscape selfies without needing to rotate their phones, as the sensor can crop from a single shot in either direction.

      What about the other cameras?

The front camera isn’t the only enhancement anticipated. Ice Universe has also indicated a 50MP telephoto camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera are expected to debut in both the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra.

The current S26 Ultra already comes with a 50MP ultra-wide and a 50MP 5x telephoto camera. It remains unclear whether these leaks pertain to the new Pro series or if the 10MP 3x camera on the S26 Ultra will be upgraded to 50MP on the S27 Pro.

Of course, this information is still based on leaks, and Samsung has yet to confirm anything. However, if these reports prove accurate, the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra could represent the most significant camera upgrade Samsung has made in years. I’ll believe it when I see it, but I am cautiously optimistic.
