Intel might reintroduce older desktop CPUs due to the rising costs of DDR5.

Older Intel Core CPUs from the 10th to 14th Gen might see a revival.

Intel appears to be considering an unexpected strategy in response to the ongoing memory shortage. As per the Chinese publication ITHome, referencing ChannelGate, the company's recent production plan indicates a restart of production for 13th and 14th Gen Core processors.

This initiative is anticipated to boost the supply for Intel’s 10th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen CPU families, particularly in mainland China. The timing is significant for DIY PC builders, as DDR5 memory prices have surged, making it harder to justify investing in newer platforms for those looking to create an affordable gaming PC.

DDR4 motherboards are being given a new opportunity

According to Tom’s Hardware, various motherboard manufacturers are once again betting on DDR4 due to memory shortages and the rising costs of DDR5. Reports suggest that at least two motherboard manufacturers have confirmed plans to increase DDR4 motherboard production through the latter half of 2026 and into 2027.

This is noteworthy because motherboard makers typically hasten to move on once new CPU platforms are launched. As older models become harder to find, prices may rise even if the CPUs themselves remain affordable. If DDR4 motherboard production increases, builders could have a far better chance of pairing budget-friendly older Intel chips with reasonably priced boards and memory.

Budget PC builders might emerge as significant beneficiaries

A bigger surprise might come next year. Tom’s Hardware has also reported that Intel is working on a new DDR4-compatible processor generation dubbed "Raptor Lake Next," set for release in the first half of 2027. It is expected to continue using the LGA 1700 platform, providing an additional lease of life to Intel’s older desktop ecosystem. However, the performance improvement compared to the 14th Gen CPUs remains unknown. AMD has already adopted a similar concept with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition.

These processors are aimed at gamers using DDR4 hardware, builders with leftover DDR4 kits, and customers unwilling to pay inflated prices for memory and motherboards, rather than those seeking the latest architecture. Older 10th Gen processors could help rejuvenate the budget PC market, while 13th and 14th Gen processors may present a more reasonable entry point for new gamers.

Valve has just shared the blueprint for its impressive Steam Machine mod.

Rather than keeping it all to themselves, Valve is working hard to make the Steam Machine more appealing. The Steam Machine originally launched at a higher price due to the chip shortage, and now one of its standout features, the customizable front faceplate, is even better. Valve has open-sourced its "Inkterface" project, enabling users to create their own e-ink faceplate for the device.

Brave's new Container feature is a game-changer for those managing multiple accounts.

Brave has introduced Containers in its desktop browser, allowing users a built-in method to maintain separate accounts, sessions, and browsing activities. This feature is being rolled out in Brave 1.92 for Windows, macOS, and Linux over the next few days. It has been a highly requested addition, especially for users who often transition between work, personal, developer, or creator accounts. Once activated, it allows for opening tabs in distinct spaces where cookies and site data are not shared outside that particular container.

Amazon plans to create in-house chips for Kindles, Fire TV, and Echo speakers.

Similar to Apple's earlier move, Amazon is now beginning to design its own chips, starting with a production target of 40 million chips per year in collaboration with a relatively unknown partner. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicates that Amazon aims to transition away from relying on externally sourced processors for its electronics lineup, marking a significant change in its processor procurement strategy for the first time in 20 years. This transition is expected to commence in 2027.
