The upcoming redesigns of Apple's iPad Pro and MacBook Pro are expected to be released in 2027.
Apple is preparing to release an updated iPad Pro lineup and a redesigned entry-level MacBook Pro in the first half of 2027, as reported by Bloomberg. The iPad Pro will maintain its current 11-inch and 13-inch sizes while focusing on internal improvements, while the MacBook Pro redesign will introduce an entry-level 14-inch model, codenamed K104, aligned with the design Apple is developing for its higher-end MacBooks. The changes to the iPad Pro will mostly be internal.
9to5Mac has confirmed the news, indicating that four new models are undergoing testing for a spring 2027 rollout, all retaining the existing chassis and available in both Wi-Fi and cellular versions. The main highlight is the introduction of faster chips, and Apple has experimented with vapor-chamber cooling for the tablet, which is intended to maintain performance during demanding usage without overheating.
Apple last refreshed the iPad Pro lineup in October 2025 with the M5 chip, so a refresh in 2027 would represent a relatively swift update compared to the typical upgrade cycle for the tablet.
A more significant change is occurring with the Mac line. Apple had already completed a straightforward update of the entry-level MacBook Pro months ago, a version codenamed J804 that retains the current design but replaces the chip with a new base M6 chip, and that model was on schedule for release this year. The K104 project replaces it with a more ambitious 14-inch laptop featuring the same new design language Apple is creating for its touchscreen-enabled, higher-end MacBook Pros, set for release between late 2026 and early 2027, but without the touchscreen. Both products are part of a larger shift in Apple’s chip strategy.
The company is accelerating its M7 chip generation, targeting to ship the base M7 chip as early as the first half of 2027, ahead of the usual timeline. This means Apple is skipping the high-end M6 Pro and M6 Max variants altogether, breaking the pattern established since the M1 debuted in 2020. The M7 line is reportedly designed mainly for on-device AI tasks, with M7 Pro and Max chips anticipated later in 2027 and an M7 Ultra expected in 2028.
These developments are not occurring apart from Apple’s supply challenges. The ongoing global memory shortage has led the company to remove certain configurations from its online store and increase prices for its current Mac and iPad offerings. Gurman’s report clearly states that continuing chip and memory issues could still impact the 2027 timeline. In June, Apple raised the starting price of the iPad Pro to $1,199 for the 11-inch model and to $1,499 for the 13-inch model.
This serves as a reminder that the incoming products will be launched in a market where component costs, rather than just design ambitions, are influencing what Apple delivers and when. The MacBook Pro redesign is also set against a backdrop of a company that has been publicly navigating its design direction. Gurman has noted that Apple’s design team has significantly diminished since the Jony Ive era, and the new CEO John Ternus has expressed intentions to rebuild it. In this context, a chassis revamp for the top-selling MacBook Pro line also symbolizes a test of Apple’s design approach post-Ive, alongside representing a hardware refresh.
Apple has not commented on the report. If the timeline is accurate, the updates for the iPad Pro and entry-level MacBook Pro would contribute to what Gurman and other reports have described as a particularly busy product year for Apple, which also includes a foldable iPhone and a special 20th-anniversary iPhone lineup, although prices for either of the 2027 products have not been revealed.
The ability to meet the first half of 2027 deadline will depend less on Apple’s design choices and more on how quickly the memory market stabilizes. The same supply issues that affected Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations earlier this year show no signs of resolution, and managing a foldable iPhone alongside two redesigned product lines simultaneously gives Apple less flexibility to absorb any further delays.
