Anthropic is in discussions with Samsung regarding the production of a tailor-made AI chip.
Anthropic is reportedly in early discussions with Samsung Electronics regarding the development of a custom AI chip, although a finalized design has yet to be determined. According to a report by The Information, the project is still in its infancy, and Anthropic has not made decisions about the chip's applications, its capabilities, or its integration into server systems. There is a possibility that Anthropic might entirely halt this initiative.
In a statement to TechCrunch, Anthropic emphasized that it will maintain a diverse hardware strategy that includes chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia, and provided no additional comments regarding the talks with Samsung. Samsung is already a key player in the AI chip ecosystem, acting as a significant manufacturing partner for Nvidia by producing chips used for AI training and inference. Additionally, the two companies are collaborating on establishing an AI chip factory in South Korea.
These discussions follow a Reuters report from April indicating that Anthropic was considering the development of its own chips due to growing compute demands surpassing available supply. At that time, the initiative was in the initial stages, lacking a dedicated team or a specific design commitment. However, the recent hiring of Clive Chan, who previously contributed to OpenAI's custom chip efforts, signals that Anthropic is progressing from exploration to active development.
This timing aligns with actions taken by Anthropic's primary competitor, OpenAI, which recently introduced its first custom chip, an inference processor named the “Intelligence Processor,” designed to lessen its reliance on Nvidia hardware. Both Amazon and Google have also launched their custom silicon offerings via their cloud services, while Anthropic currently uses chips from all three major suppliers.
Earlier this year, Anthropic's annual revenue run rate exceeded $30 billion, a significant increase from about $9 billion at the end of 2025, suggesting that the prospects for custom silicon are becoming more appealing. In April, the company entered into a long-term agreement with Google and Broadcom for approximately 3.5 gigawatts of TPU compute starting in 2027. Nonetheless, creating its own chips would provide Anthropic greater control over the hardware utilized for its models. It remains uncertain whether Samsung or another manufacturer will ultimately produce a chip for Anthropic, but the industry's shift away from complete reliance on Nvidia is clearly evident.
