Sony will cease the production of physical PlayStation game discs in January 2028.
Sony will end the production of physical discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028, as digital sales have reached 85 percent, signaling a shift away from physical media. In a recent announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Sony stated that new titles released after this date will only be available as digital downloads through the PlayStation Store. Current disc-based games will remain functional on compatible systems.
This decision follows a trend of decreasing physical sales, with digital downloads representing 85 percent of full-game software sales on PS4 and PS5 in the latest fiscal quarter, as per Sony's financial reports. Over the past fiscal year, the average for digital sales was 78 percent, a number that has grown steadily due to improvements in broadband speeds and expanded console storage.
Sony assured that previously purchased digital games will continue to be available for download "for the foreseeable future," though they did not guarantee permanent access, leaving room for potential future restrictions—a concern common in digital ownership models across the gaming sector.
This announcement coincides with a broader decline of physical media in entertainment. For example, GTA VI, the largest game launch anticipated in 2026, will be sold with a code in a box rather than a physical disc. Rockstar has indicated that a disc version might be released later, but certain retailers have been hesitant to stock a box without the disc, and there are reports suggesting a disc may never be produced.
The transition to digital has severely impacted physical game retail. GameStop has closed over 1,300 stores in the past two fiscal years, reducing its U.S. locations from about 2,900 in early 2024 to roughly 1,600 by January 2026. The retailer's model relied on trade-ins of used games and new disc sales, both of which diminish with the shift to digital-only games.
Additionally, Sony is phasing out its oldest digital storefronts. The PS3 store will begin closing in selected markets in August 2026, followed by global shutdowns for the PS3 and PS Vita stores in July 2027. Recently, Sony settled a class-action lawsuit that accused it of monopolizing digital game sales by removing third-party download codes in 2019, which forced all purchases through the PlayStation Store.
The PS5 has sold nearly 94 million units and has 125 million monthly active users, creating a significant installed base that is largely digital. The standard PS5's disc drive is becoming a less common feature among buyers, and the PS5 Digital Edition has gained popularity in various markets due to its lower price.
January 2028 provides publishers with about 18 months to revise their distribution strategies. For collectors, preservationists, and individuals in areas with unreliable internet, the countdown to the end of physical PlayStation games has begun.
