Meta will start charging for the top AI feature available on its smart glasses, and there's a limit even if you opt to pay.

      Ray-Ban Meta glasses users will see a reduction in complimentary usage of the AI feature known as Conversation Focus starting this month. This feature is designed to isolate and enhance the voice of the person the wearer is conversing with in noisy environments and is now capped at three hours per month for those without a Meta One Premium subscription. Meta confirmed this update on a support page, which states that a subscription is not necessary for general use of the AI glasses.

      Details of the new usage limits indicate that the free monthly allowance translates to about six minutes per day. A noisy dinner or lengthy meeting could easily consume a significant portion of this time in a single instance. In contrast, Meta One Premium users will enjoy a total of fifteen hours monthly, averaging about thirty minutes daily, which may still be limited for frequent users in loud environments.

      Once the allocated time is exhausted, users will have to wait for it to reset, which occurs monthly for free accounts and at the next billing cycle for paid subscribers. Meta's support page clarifies that any unused minutes will not carry over, preventing users from banking additional time for busier months.

      Concerns surrounding the cap have emerged

      The Verge, which initially reported on this limitation, tested the Conversation Focus with mobile data disabled and found the feature still functional. This aligns with Meta’s original description of Conversation Focus as a tool that utilizes the glasses’ speakers, beamforming technology, and on-device processing to enhance the speaker's voice.

      Since typical monthly limits are usually associated with AI capabilities that depend on server processing, the offline functionality of Conversation Focus has raised inquiries about the reasoning behind Meta's decision. The company has not clarified whether the feature depends on its infrastructure in any less apparent way or if the limit is merely a strategy to encourage more glasses users to subscribe.
