According to a research firm, the memory crisis is not going to subside, and you will bear the consequences.

If you were expecting a reprieve from the memory crisis, I have some disappointing news. This information comes straight from Wall Street.

Your upcoming smartphone, laptop, or tablet might be even more expensive, regardless of any recent price increases.

How severe will the situation become?

Investment bank Jefferies has provided the clearest and most alarming forecast thus far.

Memory prices are projected to rise by 40-50% in the third quarter of 2026 compared to the current quarter. Unfortunately, this doesn't end there; prices could increase by an additional 30-40% in the fourth quarter of the year.

For the entirety of 2027, Jefferies anticipates a 40-45% rise year-on-year. Given these sequential predictions, we're potentially looking at a cumulative price increase of about 150-205% between now and the end of 2027. If I were in the market for a new smartphone or laptop, I would be quite concerned.

The only substantial relief is expected in 2028, when around 15-20% of new manufacturing capacity should come online. However, demand for AI and computing will continue to grow at the same time. This means that the new supply might not be sufficient to meet the demand.

What does this signify for the pricing of your next phone or laptop?

Research firm Gartner has predicted that the combined prices of DRAM and SSDs could rise by 130% by the end of 2026. This surge would lead to an average increase in PC prices of 17% and smartphone prices of 13% relative to 2025 levels.

To put this into perspective, that 13% increase would mean an additional $130 on a $1,000 phone. Gartner also cautioned that entry-level PC options, priced under $500, could effectively vanish by 2028, as companies might struggle to cover their component costs and achieve a reasonable profit margin.

Compounding the issue, 50% of total memory capacity is currently tied up in long-term contracts with major tech companies, a figure that could rise to 70%, further diminishing the supply available for consumer devices.

After the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro, the iMac may be next in line for an OLED upgrade. The iPhone received an OLED panel in 2017, followed by the iPad Pro in 2024, and the MacBook Pro is expected to follow suit later this year or early next year. As for the iMac, TrendForce suggests it could also receive an OLED upgrade, though no timeline has been provided. It's clear that Apple aims to transition its current display technologies to OLED, enhancing color quality for both regular users and professionals.

This $1,299 gaming PC aims to become a Steam Machine while waiting for Valve. Valve’s Steam Machine initiative is already realized in MetaPC's latest prebuilt offering.

Although Valve’s Steam Machine is synonymous with SteamOS, the platform will also be available on systems outside of the new hybrid console. In response, MetaPCs is among the first to capitalize on this by opening preorders for the Steamroller, a new prebuilt gaming desktop that comes with SteamOS installed by default. Unlike a compact console, the Steamroller is a standard desktop PC with conventional parts and upgrade possibilities. It is priced at $1,299, with preorders starting on July 3, 2026.

This bargain Steam Machine clone sounds too good to be true, and it probably is. A Chinese Steam Machine copy claims to offer unbelievable hardware at an impossible price.

Given Valve’s new Steam Machine has already shocked many with its pricing, it’s expected that lower-cost alternatives will flood the market. Valve currently charges over $1,000 for its compact SteamOS PC, leading others to try and replicate that experience for less.

One listing from China exemplifies this but raises suspicions. According to VideoCardz, a mini PC advertised on Reddit claims to provide a compact SteamOS system with a 2TB SSD, AMD Ryzen 5 5500 processor, Radeon RX 6750 GRE 10GB graphics, and 16GB of DDR5 memory for 4,680 RMB, approximately $688. This sounds amazing… if it were genuine.

Two research companies have just validated the impact of the memory crisis: higher prices for phones and laptops, with no significant price reduction anticipated until 2028.
