The new trailer for One Piece has arrived, but why is Netflix choosing to remake it at this time?
WIT Studio approaches One Piece with fewer limitations compared to the original.
Netflix has finally showcased the first substantial look at The One Piece, the anime reimagining of Eiichiro Oda's cherished manga, three years after its announcement.
The one-minute teaser premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and features Gol D. Roger's iconic final words, the moment that ignited the Pirate Era.
Why is Netflix creating a One Piece anime remake when there are already over 1,000 episodes available?
The current Toei Animation series consists of 1,167 episodes, having aired for 25 years, making a new remake seem unnecessary at first. However, as Polygon points out, the original anime had to take non-canonical routes for two decades to avoid keeping pace with the manga, as its strict weekly production schedule hindered the dynamism viewers desired.
WIT Studio, recognized for Attack on Titan and Spy x Family, is managing this adaptation with significantly less pressure to produce weekly episodes. This should result in noticeably more refined visuals and a quicker overall rhythm. There is also a creative element at play; as CBR noted, Oda himself mentioned that the narrative has become so extensive and intricate that newer audiences might not connect with the older animation style.
Director Masashi Koizuka, in conversation with ComicBook.com, emphasized his goal to fully exploit the best aspects of the manga, including mature themes such as war and racism that were occasionally softened or modified in the original series.
What has been confirmed about One Piece season one on Netflix?
The inaugural season will adapt the manga’s first 50 chapters across seven episodes, concluding when Luffy encounters Sanji. Mayumi Tanaka, who has voiced Luffy in Japanese since 1999, will reprise her role and described the recording experience as thoroughly enjoyable. Additionally, WIT Studio’s CEO affirmed that the new animation is entirely crafted by humans and not AI-generated, addressing a concern that has arisen in other anime projects recently.
As Netflix's anime library continues to expand, along with the trailer release, the platform reported reaching 1.5 billion global anime views in 2025. The company also unveiled an unreleased trailer for the second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners during the same event.
Netflix is also producing a live-action One Piece series that has adapted up through chapter 154 of the manga's 1,185 chapters, with a third season confirmed for 2027. This comes as Oda has acknowledged that the source material has entered its final phase.
The One Piece remake is set to premiere on Netflix in February 2027, and the return of Tanaka alone gives it a sense of familiarity.
