GTA 6 might still be a while off, so Rockstar has given GTA 5 a new makeover.
With Grand Theft Auto 6 just a few months away, Rockstar Games is encouraging longtime Grand Theft Auto 5 players to revisit Los Santos. The company has announced that those who own the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of GTA 5 will be eligible for a complimentary upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S editions of the game.
This announcement coincides with Rockstar's efforts to build anticipation for GTA 6, which is set to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Previously, transitioning from the older console versions to the new generation required a separate purchase, typically around $10. However, starting Thursday, qualifying players will be able to upgrade to the latest version at no extra charge.
PC players are also set to receive an upgrade. Rockstar is permitting users to upgrade from the older Legacy version of GTA 5 to the newer Enhanced edition, which features a range of graphical and technical enhancements.
The upgrade introduces support for ray tracing, quicker loading times thanks to SSD optimization, improved audio elements, DualSense controller features, and various other improvements aimed at utilizing modern gaming hardware.
Rockstar introduces new content alongside technical upgrades
The complimentary upgrade extends beyond just visual enhancements. Players moving to the latest version will gain access to features that were not available in the older versions. A significant addition is Hao’s Special Works (HSW), a customization system allowing certain vehicles to receive performance upgrades and enhanced tuning capabilities.
The update also includes Career Progress tracking, additional rewards, and various quality-of-life improvements geared towards both longtime GTA Online players and returnees. Rockstar has also released a migration guide to assist players in transferring Story Mode saves and GTA Online progress between versions, ensuring they can continue their existing journeys without any resets.
For players who have invested years into developing characters, businesses, and collections in GTA Online, a smooth migration process is likely to be one of the most crucial features of the upgrade.
GTA Online continues to be a significant revenue source for Rockstar
The timing of this free upgrade seems deliberate. Despite its launch in 2013, GTA 5 remains one of the most successful games ever made. Its online component is extremely lucrative for Rockstar, generating income through Shark Cards and other in-game purchases.
According to recently leaked financial data, GTA Online reportedly generated over $1 million per day between September 2025 and April 2026. This level of engagement explains why Rockstar continues to invest in keeping the game relevant nearly 13 years after its launch.
The free upgrade may also serve another function. Many fans speculate that Rockstar aims to have as many players as possible on the latest version of GTA Online ahead of the release of GTA 6. Some have theorized that progress, rewards, or online features could ultimately transfer into Rockstar’s forthcoming online experience.
For now, Rockstar is dedicated to providing existing players with a smoother, more visually appealing version of GTA 5 while they await the company’s most significant release to date. After more than a decade in the market, GTA 5 is once again demonstrating that it still has plenty of vitality left before GTA 6 takes the spotlight.
