The Motorola Razr Fold had a lot at stake even before I inserted my SIM card. Motorola has invested years in redefining its modern Razr image around its legendary flip phones. Some of these devices carried a charm that surpassed mere nostalgia, while others were genuinely impressive. However, a book-style foldable presents a unique set of challenges.

In this space, Samsung has taken years to refine the Galaxy Z Fold concept, while Google has attempted to make the Pixel Fold series more practical. So, what makes Motorola's first attempt trustworthy?

I approached it with both curiosity and skepticism, prepared for the typical issues found in initial generation products, such as questionable hinges, cumbersome designs, or software still adapting to the intricacies of a foldable screen.

After using the Razr Fold, I don’t believe Motorola has delivered a clumsy first effort.

While it is still a first-generation book-style foldable with a few rough edges, this phone also reflects a surprising degree of refinement and thoughtfulness.

The design seems well-considered, the hinge exudes more confidence than anticipated, the cameras surpass the expectations set by Motorola’s prior image, and the inclusion of the Moto Pen Ultra enhances the overall package.

The crucial question now is whether the combined offerings are sufficient. Foldables have evolved from experimental devices to high-end products that make even the iPhone appear to be a safer investment. So, does the Motorola Razr Fold stand as a genuine competitor to Samsung, or is it merely an attractive standalone release?

**Design: Motorola Razr Fold Avoids First-Gen Pitfalls**

**Quick take:** The Razr Fold doesn't seem like a debut product, marking its significant design success.

The term “first-gen foldable” often carries caveats. You expect certain compromises and peculiar designs. However, the Motorola Razr Fold surprisingly does not project that feel.

This marks Motorola's inaugural foray into the book-style foldable segment, and the device exudes a sense of confidence in its shape and finish, which gives it more character than the typical metal and glass layout. The Pantone Lily White version particularly impresses with its soft, almost silk-like appearance, rendering the phone more of a fashion accessory than a delicate gadget.

The chamfered edges enhance the design, providing a cleaned-up premium feel and making the device easier to hold than anticipated. This is important for a foldable, as it remains a sizeable device. The dimensions are felt when closed, and users are certainly aware they are holding something heavier than an ordinary phone. Nevertheless, Motorola has succeeded in making that weight feel purposeful.

Initially, I was unsure about the hinge, yet it turned out to be one of the standout features. It opens and closes with enough resistance to inspire trust. The expansive inner screen offers a tablet-like workspace, while the outer display remains functional without needing to fully unfold the device. Consequently, Motorola didn’t require a trial run—the Razr Fold successfully reflects a true premium foldable.

That said, it does possess some quirks. It is slightly thicker and heavier compared to the Z Fold 7 (4.2mm unfolded, 8.9mm folded, weighing 215g). Therefore, the Razr Fold is about 1mm thicker and nearly 30 grams heftier. The weight
