Google has begun the rollout of Android 17 for eligible Pixel phones, which includes a revamped design along with numerous new features and enhancements. Concurrently, the company is releasing its June Pixel Drop update, introducing new multitasking tools, AI-driven creative functionalities, improved calling experiences, and additional safety features for Pixel Watch users.

Bubbles introduce a fresh approach to multitasking

The standout feature in this Pixel Drop is Bubbles, a new multitasking capability that allows users to keep certain apps floating above others on the screen. Apps like Gemini, web browsers, and calendars can remain accessible in small, movable windows, simplifying the process of switching between tasks without consistently toggling between apps.

Pixel Fold devices will also receive a dedicated Bubble Bar, which serves as a centralized location to organize and manage active bubbles. Google designed this feature to enhance multitasking convenience on larger foldable displays.

Screen recordings now include built-in reaction videos

      Google

Additionally, Google is introducing Screen Reactions, a function that overlays a selfie video directly onto screen recordings. This enables users to create reaction videos, tutorials, or gameplay commentary without needing separate recording or editing tools.

Gemini can now produce videos and music

With this update, Gemini Omni has also made its debut on Pixel devices. It is an AI-based video generation tool that creates custom videos from text prompts. Users can describe their desired visuals, and Gemini will generate a video according to that description. This feature is accessible only through the Gemini app if users have a Gemini Pro subscription.

Google is also launching Lyria 3, which can generate original music tracks based on text prompts or images. Users can adjust parameters such as style, vocals, and tempo to create personalized songs.

Numerous existing Pixel features are expanding

Google is broadening the availability of several previously announced features to additional devices and regions. Voice Translate is now extending to the Pixel 10a, while Manual Call Screen is debuting in India, enabling Google to handle unknown callers and display the reason for the call before users answer.

The company is also expanding conversational photo editing in Google Photos to Germany, the UK, France, Spain, and Italy. At the same time, Magic Cue is being rolled out to more messaging applications, and Take a Message is now equipped with custom greetings and greater availability.

Pixel Watch receives enhanced emergency features

For Pixel Watch users, a new Emergency Sharing integration has been introduced, functioning with Fall Detection, Car Crash Detection, and Loss of Pulse Detection. In the event of a serious incident, the watch can automatically contact emergency services and notify designated emergency contacts, similar to the Crash Detection feature found on newer Apple Watches.

Some features included in the June Pixel Drop are limited to specific devices and regions; however, Pixel phones from the Pixel 6 series onward that are eligible for Android 17 will be able to access Screen Reactions, the new Bubbles multitasking feature, and AI-driven music creation through Lyria 3.
