Windows 11 now locates files when you enter just two characters instead of three.
TL;DR: Windows 11 has reduced the character requirement for searches from three to two. Local files now take precedence over web results and Copilot suggestions. June Patch Tuesday has arrived.
Microsoft's June 2026 Patch Tuesday update has discreetly resolved one of the longstanding annoyances of Windows Search. The search box can now locate files with just two characters, down from the former requirement of three. Files labeled Q3, V2, or any other brief title can now be found easily.
Additionally, the update alters the ranking of search results. Local files will now be prioritized at the top, instead of being overshadowed by web results, app suggestions, and Copilot prompts. For those who use short, functional file names, this improvement alleviates a minor frustration that compounded with each search.
Windows Latest described the June release as the most significant Patch Tuesday of the year. In addition to the search enhancement, it contains a record 200 security patches that address 33 critical vulnerabilities and three publicly disclosed zero-day flaws.
Reducing the character requirement from three to two may seem insignificant, but it is not. Many users who handle numerous files daily commonly utilize two-character naming conventions without much thought. Previously, the three-character threshold necessitated an extra keystroke before Windows would initiate a search, and even then, the relevant file frequently appeared below unwanted web links and AI suggestions.
This update is a usability enhancement that seems obvious only after its implementation. While Microsoft’s focus on AI has been prominent in their public messaging this year, the most practical improvement released in June was the ability to locate a file named Q3.
