Video comments could enhance the value of Reddit tutorials and advice discussions

Reddit is introducing a new feature that allows users to respond in threads using video comments. This function is being made available to all users starting today, enabling individuals to record or upload a video directly in the comment box within supported communities.

Initially, one might question the need for video replies when GIFs are already an option. While the meme potential is certainly there, video comments could prove to be significantly more helpful in communities where individuals seek genuine assistance, feedback, or demonstrations.

Video replies could simplify the process of giving advice

Consider DIY-focused subreddits where users share methods for fixing a loose hinge, repairing a cable, or assembling an item. A brief video reply would be much more effective in illustrating the exact movements or steps compared to a lengthy written comment. This also applies to cooking subreddits, where someone can showcase a particular texture, chopping technique, or recipe tip rather than relying on verbal descriptions.

Additionally, threads about makeup, skincare, fitness, sports, gaming, and tech support could see improvements from visually demonstrating solutions. A user might illustrate a new makeup approach, demonstrate soccer techniques, clarify a workout form correction, or guide another user through a device setting without transforming the comment into a lengthy set of instructions.

How Reddit video comments will function

In communities where this feature is enabled, users will now find a video icon alongside the existing image and GIF options in the comment box. They will have the option to record a new video or upload one as a response. Reddit states that video comments will also be accessible on user profiles.

The company has confirmed that videos will not autoplay and will adhere to users' audio settings to prevent unexpected playback in bustling comment sections. Additionally, video comments will undergo moderation through Reddit’s safety systems before being publicly visible.

Currently, this feature is limited to public, safe-for-work communities where it has been activated, giving moderators and Reddit some oversight on how the format is utilized.

The habit of mindlessly scrolling through social media is more damaging than you realize, particularly for teenagers

A decade-long study indicates that excessive social media usage can have a negative impact on mental health for teens

A recent study from Australia adds significant evidence to the concerns surrounding social media usage among adolescents. Conducted by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, it found that teenagers who spent two hours or more per day on social media were more likely to report depressive symptoms and lower wellbeing one year later compared to those who spent less than an hour daily on such platforms.

While this study does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between social media and mental health issues, the correlation is noteworthy, as the research tracked young people's experiences over time rather than depending solely on short-term data.

Instagram unveils new voice message effects, allowing you to sound like a pirate, a grandma, or a World Cup enthusiast

Instagram is rolling out 15 AI-driven voice effects, increasing from the eight that were initially introduced earlier this year in March.

Instagram is expanding its collection of AI-enhanced voice effects for direct messages, adding new filters as part of Meta's promotion for the FIFA World Cup 2026. This update is available on both Android and iOS, but Instagram has noted that it is currently limited to certain countries.

The feature was first launched in India in March with eight effects: Chipmunk, Demon, Alien, Robot, Underwater, Stadium, Wobble, and Fishbowl. The broader rollout now includes a total of 15 effects, introducing Goal!, Pirate, Autotune, Whisper, Grandpa, Grandma, and Princess. The Goal! effect is a new addition aligned with the FIFA World Cup and triggers a special animation when sent.

TikTok is experimenting with voice calls in direct messages, recognizing that scrolling isn't the only interaction needed

It seems that scrolling, texting, and gaming in your DMs wasn't sufficient.

TikTok appears to be testing a voice calling feature within direct messages, a development that could position the short-video platform in stronger competition with instant messaging services like Messenger and WhatsApp. Jonah Manzano recently shared on X that he spotted this feature, along with screenshots, highlighting an incoming call notification labeled "TikTok Audio" and a phone icon integrated into the DM interface.

Comments on Reddit are now receiving video responses, and this feature may be more beneficial than it appears.

Reddit's implementation of video comments might enhance the usefulness of replies in communities focused on DIY, cooking, makeup, fitness, and tutorials, as demonstrating a step visually can often be clearer than describing it in words.
