Cash App is now operating as a phone carrier, offering an unlimited plan for $40.
Your finance app is now targeting your phone plan
Cash App has already taken charge of many of your financial tasks, including money transfers, debit cards, investments, and even tax filing. Now, it aims to expand its influence into another everyday aspect of your life. The company has introduced Cash App Mobile, a new unlimited 5G phone plan priced at $40 per month, inclusive of taxes and fees. Operating on AT&T’s network, it is supported by Gigs, a firm that assists brands in launching integrated mobile services. Currently, the plan is rolling out as a pilot for select Cash App users, with plans for broader access in the near future.
The app that helps you share your dinner bill is now looking to manage your phone services.
Cash App Mobile offers unlimited 5G data, voice calls, and texts, along with unlimited HD streaming, 10GB of hotspot data each month within the US, and data roaming available in Canada and Mexico. The platform highlights the absence of long-term contracts, credit assessments, and in-store visits. It markets the service differently than conventional carrier plans, targeting what it refers to as “Modern Earners,” which includes young adults, underbanked individuals, and gig workers who might have inconsistent income but require dependable connectivity.
According to the company, millions of users are already utilizing the Cash App Card to pay their phone bills, prompting them to capitalize on this recurring payment and offer the service directly.
Owen Jennings, Cash App's Executive Officer and Head of Business, mentioned that the aim is to provide affordability and simplicity by managing mobile services directly through the Cash App. Gigs CEO and co-founder Hermann Frank noted that traditional carrier models do not accurately reflect the way many people live and earn today.
Further convenience for users
While a $40 unlimited 5G plan may not cause disruption solely based on price, as there are numerous MVNOs and prepaid carriers in this price range, it holds genuine appeal. For current Cash App users, handling a phone plan within the same app they use for spending, saving, borrowing, and receiving payments is practical, while the platform adds yet another subscription-like element to users' monthly expenses.
