Waymo introduces a $29.99/month subscription plan for its most regular robotaxi users.
Waymo has introduced a subscription service named Waymo Premier, priced at $29.99 per month, aimed at its most frequent users in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, with initial availability being by invitation only. Subscribers will benefit from prioritized matching, up to five free cancellations each month, and will earn 10% in loyalty credits, referred to as Waymo Cash, for every trip taken.
In a blog post on Thursday, the Alphabet-owned company stated, “You spoke, and we listened to how we can offer an even more elevated experience for you, our top riders.” This subscription seeks to generate recurring revenue from high-frequency users in areas of high demand. Waymo currently leads the US robotaxi industry with 577 vehicles operational in Texas, outpacing Tesla’s 42 vehicles, and is expanding its services aggressively, with plans to launch in London later this year.
Revenue generation is crucial; Alphabet’s Other Bets category, which includes Waymo, reported a loss of $2.1 billion in Q1 2026, an increase from a loss of $1.22 billion the previous year. Revenue in this segment fell to $411 million from $450 million. A subscription model that secures high-frequency riders helps bridge the gap between the costs of running an autonomous fleet and its revenue.
In February, Waymo secured $16 billion in funding at a valuation of $126 billion, more than double its assessment from October 2024, with contributions from Alphabet and investors like Andreessen Horowitz, Fidelity, and T. Rowe Price. This funding is supporting fleet expansion, including the introduction of a more affordable sixth-generation Ojai robotaxi produced by China’s Geely.
While the Premier tier is limited in scope, it indicates a shift in the business model. At $29.99 monthly, the subscription alone may not be revolutionary, but the prioritized matching in high-demand areas addresses a significant pain point for regular users: long wait times during peak periods. For those who frequently use Waymo services multiple times a week, the loyalty credits could offset subscription costs.
It's essential to consider the competitive landscape; Amazon’s Zoox has yet to launch commercially, and Waymo halted operations in five cities due to a software failure related to flood detection in May, but services have since resumed. Tesla’s robotaxi fleet remains a small fraction of Waymo’s, allowing Waymo to establish a loyalty program ahead of the competition.
