Waymo has introduced a subscription plan for its regular robotaxi passengers at a price of $29.99 per month.
Waymo has introduced a $29.99 monthly subscription service named Waymo Premier, aimed at frequent users in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Initially available by invitation only, this subscription offers benefits such as priority matching, up to five complimentary cancellations each month, and 10% in loyalty credits, referred to as Waymo Cash, for each trip taken.
In a blog post on Thursday, the Alphabet-owned company shared, "You spoke, and we listened to how we can offer an even more elevated experience for you, our top riders."
This subscription model aims to generate recurring revenue from high-usage riders in regions with the greatest demand. Waymo currently leads the US robotaxi industry with 577 vehicles operating in Texas alone, compared to Tesla’s 42, and is aggressively expanding, with plans to launch in London later this year.
Financially, Alphabet’s Other Bets segment, which includes Waymo, reported a loss of $2.1 billion in Q1 2026, an increase from the $1.22 billion loss a year prior. Revenue in this segment decreased to $411 million from $450 million. A subscription model that engages regular users is intended to bridge the gap between the costs associated with operating an autonomous fleet and the income it produces.
In February, Waymo secured $16 billion in funding at a valuation of $126 billion, more than double its valuation from October 2024. This funding, from Alphabet as well as external investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Fidelity, and T. Rowe Price, supports fleet expansion initiatives, including the rollout of the more affordable sixth-generation Ojai robotaxi produced by China’s Geely.
Although the Premier subscription is relatively modest, it indicates the direction of Waymo’s business strategy. Priced at $29.99 a month, it isn't game-changing on its own, but the priority matching offers a solution to the primary issue of long wait times during peak hours for regular riders. For those who commonly use Waymo for multiple trips each week, the loyalty credits can make the subscription financially beneficial.
In the competitive landscape, Amazon’s Zoox has yet to commence commercial operations. Waymo had temporarily paused its services in five cities due to a software failure in flood detection last May, but has since resumed operations. Meanwhile, Tesla's robotaxi fleet is still significantly smaller than Waymo's. With no major US competitor at scale, Waymo can afford to develop a loyalty program before it becomes a pressing necessity.
