Ninja Theory's Senua will provide Hellblade enthusiasts with the gameplay they have been seeking.
The studio has called off Project: Mara and redirected all 85 of its developers to focus on the upcoming Hellblade sequel.
Ninja Theory, the developer of the Hellblade series, announced the latest game in the franchise during the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. Titled Senua, this new action-adventure title is a direct response to feedback suggesting that Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and its 2024 sequel Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II emphasized visuals over gameplay. Studio head Dom Matthews confirmed that the game is set for release in 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Game Pass.
A different type of Hellblade experience
Senua will abandon the linear progression of the previous two Hellblade installments in favor of a more expansive action-adventure approach. Matthews described the gameplay as evenly divided among combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving elements. He noted that the world will be roughly twice the size of Hellblade II, comprising interconnected areas, yet it will not be an open-world title.
The combat system will undergo significant changes, allowing Senua to engage multiple enemies simultaneously, wield dual weapons like axes and torches, and utilize a set of unique Focus abilities. One such ability will enable her to manipulate reality, serving both as a mechanism for navigation and as a means to manage crowds during battles. This will also mark the introduction of boss fights within the series for the first time.
The narrative will continue from Hellblade II, placing Senua in purgatory, envisioned as her childhood home. She will be on a quest to find a path to the afterlife to reunite with her lost loved ones. Matthews emphasized that the game aims to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers.
Ninja Theory has put Project: Mara on hold to concentrate on Senua.
Senua represents the first occasion in over a decade that Ninja Theory has dedicated its entire staff to a single project since DmC: Devil May Cry. The studio currently employs 85 individuals, and Matthews confirmed that the previously mentioned horror project, Project: Mara, has been set aside to allow the full team to focus on Senua.
With the entire team backing a single endeavor for the first time in more than ten years, Ninja Theory is optimistic that Senua will resonate with both loyal fans of the Hellblade games and those who may not have enjoyed them as much.
