Kyle Vogt's Bot Company is facing a lawsuit for converting an Airbnb into a robotics laboratory.

**Summary:** Kyle Vogt’s Bot Company is accused of using a San Francisco Airbnb as a covert robot testing facility. The host discovered a six-foot prototype and is suing for $12,000 in damages.

A host of a San Francisco Airbnb is suing The Bot Company, a robotics startup valued at $2 billion and co-founded by former Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt, for allegedly turning his home into a secret robot lab. Sean Donovan claims that workers booked his property in the Portola neighborhood under false pretenses in April, pretending to be remote workers from Thailand. He is seeking $12,383 in damages.

What Donovan found was not a group of digital nomads. Using his outdoor Ring camera, he observed over 30 people entering and exiting the home across 11 nights. He overheard some discussing their “shifts,” he told SFGate.

While taking out the trash, Donovan noticed bundles of wires leading into the house. Following them, he discovered a six-foot robot that he described as resembling a “borg” from Star Trek or a massive “Roomba with treads.” The Bot Company develops household chore robots but has disclosed very little about its prototypes.

The damage to his property was significant. A 70-year-old family dining table was scratched and marked by water. A Franciscan pottery set was missing, a bathroom tile was chipped, and a coffee table was damaged. A mug was broken, and its handle had been glued back on. An entire shoe rack was also missing. “They came in and put everything back in a new place,” Donovan explained to SFGate. “Silverware in a new drawer or a different room.”

Vogt co-founded The Bot Company in 2024 with Paril Jain, former head of Tesla’s AI division. The startup has raised over $300 million, including a $150 million round led by Greenoaks, and holds a valuation of about $2 billion, despite sharing very little about its projects.

Vogt’s past venture as CEO of Cruise, GM’s robotaxi division, ended poorly as it was shut down in 2024 following a series of safety issues. GM integrated its technical team and shifted its focus on autonomous driving toward personal vehicles.

There is a valid reason to test household robots in real homes instead of sanitized labs, as domestic settings are cluttered, unpredictable, and filled with fragile items. However, conducting such tests without the owner's consent and under a false identity is unacceptable. The lawsuit claims unauthorized commercial research and development activities, including robotic prototype testing and filming for commercial use.

Other robotics firms conducting real-world tests have faced similar criticism. Robotaxi operators have been scrutinized for using public roads as makeshift test tracks. It seems The Bot Company has adopted that same approach in a private residence, resulting in a damaged home and an unintentional peek at a prototype the company would have preferred to keep hidden.
