If this turns out to be true, it would coincide with the typical launch period reserved for Apple's annual iPhone announcements, with the iPhone 18 series likely launching around the same time.
The suggested September date likely pertains to a launch in China rather than an immediate worldwide availability. Following OnePlus' recent release trends, international markets such as India and Europe are expected to see the device shortly thereafter, possibly within the next month.
Is OnePlus ready to move past the traditional flagship launch season?
A September launch wouldn't be unprecedented. Over the past few generations, OnePlus has gradually shifted its flagship release dates earlier, with the OnePlus 11 launching in China in January 2023, the OnePlus 12 in December 2023, and the OnePlus 13 in October 2024.

However, to make this shift impactful, the OnePlus 16 must feature impressive hardware, and early rumors indicate that OnePlus is aiming high.
Could the 200MP telephoto camera be the standout feature?
The rumored hardware implies that OnePlus is positioning its flagship for both performance and longevity. The OnePlus 16 is anticipated to include Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset, which is said to provide a significant performance enhancement over the previous generation, although this upgrade might come at a higher cost for manufacturers.
Reports also suggest a 240Hz OLED display, while the battery could reach approximately 9,000mAh, potentially making it one of the largest capacities seen in a mainstream flagship device.
The camera setup could turn out to be particularly noteworthy. The phone is expected to feature a 50MP primary camera along with a 200MP telephoto camera. If this information is accurate, the telephoto sensor should enhance zoom capabilities and improve portrait photography. Longer focal lengths can create better background compression, helping to distinguish the subject from the background in a more natural manner.
