Samsung One UI 9 will turn off your fingerprint recognition every time you access the power menu.
The lockdown button has been removed, replaced by medical information, and your Galaxy phone now initiates lockdown each time you open and close the menu.
Samsung Galaxy phones have included a lockdown mode for a considerable time. This feature, found in the power menu, disables fingerprint and face unlocking, requiring you to enter a PIN instead.
It serves as a valuable option in situations where someone may pressure you to unlock your phone with your face or fingerprint. However, many users were either unaware of its existence or never utilized it prior. One UI 9 addresses this by eliminating the manual choice altogether.
What changes have occurred in the power menu?
According to SammyFans and discussions from the r/oneui community on Reddit, One UI 9 Beta 2 (based on Android 17) alters the functionality of the lockdown mode.
The specific lockdown button is no longer present in the power menu. Instead, you’ll find medical information, which offers more contextual assistance for first responders during emergencies.
While the lockdown feature itself remains, it has now become automatic.
As soon as you access the power menu and close it, One UI 9 activates lockdown. This locks the device and disables fingerprint and face recognition. The only way to regain access is by entering your PIN, pattern, or password.
Is this improvement actually beneficial or merely a nuisance?
I would argue that this is a significant enhancement. The previous version required you to remain calm during stressful moments, locate the correct button, and press it before handing over your phone or, worse, having it forcibly taken.
The new method entirely alleviates that mental load. Opening the power menu feels like a natural instinct when sensing something is amiss, and reaching for the side button is a reflex. Samsung has successfully transformed that instinct into a security measure without requiring any additional steps.
Currently, this feature is active in One UI 9 Beta 2 and has not yet been confirmed for the stable release. Since Samsung has not officially announced this modification, it may still undergo changes before the public release of One UI 9.
