Meta's AI bot assisted hackers in stealing Instagram accounts, and it was alarmingly simple to deceive.
Hackers didn't need your password; they just requested it politely from Meta's AI chatbot.
Instagram has addressed a serious security vulnerability that allowed hackers to hijack accounts by interacting with Meta’s own AI support chatbot. This issue became apparent over the weekend when several users on Reddit and X reported that their accounts were compromised.
Even my Instagram account was hacked. The password was changed without my consent, and throughout yesterday, I received various password reset requests. Additionally, I was repeatedly logged out of the IG iOS app. Quite concerning. — Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane) June 1, 2026
According to TechCrunch, security researcher Jane Wong was also among those affected. “The password was changed without my consent, and I was getting numerous password reset attempts throughout the day,” she stated. “Quite concerning.”
How did the hack occur?
A video shared on X detailed the entire process, which is surprisingly straightforward. The hacker initially used a VPN to spoof their location, bypassing Instagram’s automated account security measures. Next, they initiated a chat with Meta’s AI Support Assistant and simply asked the bot to add a new email address to the targeted account.

Here’s where it gets surprising. The chatbot sent a verification code to the hacker’s email address rather than the victim’s. The hacker relayed that code back to the chatbot, which then provided a button to reset the password. This illustrates just how easily an Instagram account could be taken over.
TechCrunch has confirmed that the hacker’s public email inbox received the verification code, validating the method as it was demonstrated.
Is your account in danger?
The most alarming aspect of this attack is that the hacker never needed any access to the victim’s actual email address during the entire procedure. The entire exploit completely circumvented the legitimate account owner.
Instagram spokesperson Andy Stone confirmed on Monday that the issue has now been resolved. However, it is still unknown how many accounts were compromised before the fix. The silver lining is that this particular problem is no longer a concern.
The current state of AI in support
The increasing prices of consumer electronics, the ease with which fraudsters can deceive individuals, and the challenges faced by universities as students resort to AI to cheat are just a few examples of how AI has complicated our lives.
Personally, I find AI applications in support chats particularly frustrating. After ordering dinner that was delayed, the AI support chat kept me from speaking to a human for almost two hours, repeatedly assuring me that my food would arrive in ten minutes.
Previously, any questions I had were swiftly addressed by a human customer service agent within minutes. Meta’s AI support chatbot exemplifies how the introduction of AI in customer service can lead to unnecessary stress for users.

Samsung One UI 9 will disable fingerprint unlock whenever you access the power menu.
The lockdown button is removed, replaced by medical information, and your Galaxy phone locks down each time you open and close the menu.
For years, Samsung Galaxy phones have featured a lockdown mode—a manual option within the power menu that disables fingerprint and face unlock, requiring a PIN entry. This feature serves as a useful last resort in situations where someone may force you to unlock your phone using your fingerprint or face. The issue was that most users either weren’t aware it existed or didn’t use it. One UI 9 addresses that by eliminating the choice altogether.
