The final trailer for season 3 of House of the Dragon has revealed its most awaited moment.
HBO has always excelled at creating suspense, so it was unexpected when the final trailer for House of the Dragon season 3 casually exposed one of its key moments right away.
The outcome of the highly anticipated Battle of the Gullet, the main naval confrontation that kicks off the season, is now publicly known. Rhaenyra Targaryen emerges victorious from the battle and seizes control of King’s Landing. For fans of George R.R. Martin’s work, Fire and Blood, this was anticipated. For others, it serves as a bittersweet spoiler they might have preferred to discover while watching, although the conclusion of season 2 made this turn of events almost inevitable.
The Battle of the Gullet is set to be the largest spectacle in the history of Game of Thrones.
The trailer begins with a scene filled with bodies, featuring Daemon Targaryen, portrayed by Matt Smith, striking down foes in the mud as majestic dragons unleash fire upon a naval fleet below. The tumult of the Battle of the Gullet swiftly transitions to Rhaenyra standing triumphantly in a conquered King’s Landing, proclaiming her intention to secure the city without further bloodshed.
Showrunner Ryan Condal has described the season premiere as potentially the wildest episode of television ever produced. The battle will see Corlys Velaryon and his fleet face off against Tyland Lannister’s forces and the Triarchy, promising to be one of the bloodiest naval battles in the entire history of Westeros.
Securing the Iron Throne is one challenge, but maintaining it is an entirely different fight.
The trailer underscores that Rhaenyra's quest for the Iron Throne is already proving to be her downfall. Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke, delivers the trailer’s most impactful line as she warns that the crown is a heavy burden. She is correct; Rhaenyra finds herself engulfed by plots from Team Green, who are actively working to undermine her authority with smear campaigns throughout the city.
Even within her own council, allegiances are shifting in ways she hasn't yet perceived. The trailer suggests there are disagreements, divided loyalties, and quiet betrayals that can inflict more pain than any weapon.
Aemond Targaryen, still riding the formidable dragon Vhagar, poses a significant threat. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra is convinced that eliminating Aegon II will unify the kingdom behind her, seemingly oblivious to the growing resentment among the common people during her reign.
Alicent also appears to be making her own strategic moves, including a moment where she confronts a visibly shaken Rhaenyra, asking, “Did I not warn you that you would come to this?”
Emma D’Arcy, who portrays Rhaenyra, has stated that the character is finally stepping into a more proactive role this season after being pushed into corners for two seasons. However, the trailer indicates that this step forward comes at a harsh price.
If season 2 tested your patience, season 3 seems poised to compensate for every slow build. House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and Max on June 21.
