      For the first time, Claude users can choose whether their AI assistant prioritizes speed or depth of thought.

      Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 4.8, and while the improvements in benchmarks are noteworthy, the most significant change for everyday users is relatively straightforward.

      Users can now instruct Claude on the level of thought it should apply before responding to queries. Additionally, dynamic workflows are available in research preview for users on the Enterprise, Team, and Max plans.

      What is effort control and why is it important?

      Effort control is a new feature alongside the model selector on the claude.ai page, where you interact with the AI model. It enables users to determine how much effort Claude puts into any specific query.

      There are five effort levels available in Opus 4.8: Low, Medium, High (Default), Extra, and Max. As indicated, low effort responses are quicker and better suited for brief or simple inquiries, email drafts, or tasks requiring speed rather than depth.

      Conversely, the High and Max settings compel Claude to engage more thoroughly before responding. These higher effort levels are perfect for handling complex multi-step problems, detailed analyses, or comparisons, where precision is more critical than speed. However, since the AI model takes longer to respond, these levels will quickly deplete your rate limits.

      This control feature is accessible across all plans. Previously, users would submit a prompt, choose the AI model based on its known strengths, and Claude would decide the amount of thought to apply. Effort control essentially transfers that decision-making power to the user.

      What else has changed?

      The most notable upgrade for developers is the introduction of dynamic workflows. Claude Code can now manage large tasks, generate numerous parallel subagents in a single session, and verify its own outputs before providing a response.

      The Messages API can now incorporate system entries within the messages array, enabling developers to modify Claude's instructions mid-task without disrupting the prompt cache. This functionality is especially beneficial for altering permissions, token budgets, or environmental context.

      Anthropic also reports that Opus 4.8 is approximately four times less likely than its predecessor to overlook code errors. This release comes just 41 days after Opus 4.7, signifying a faster update frequency.
