      For the first time, users of Claude can choose whether their AI assistant prioritizes speed or depth of thought.

      Anthropic has just introduced Claude Opus 4.8, and while the benchmark advancements are significant, the most impactful change for regular users is simpler.

      You now have the ability to instruct Claude on how much effort to put into answering your questions. Dynamic workflows are also being made available in research preview for users on the Enterprise, Team, and Max plans.

      What is effort control and why is it important?

      This new feature, located alongside the model selector on the claude.ai page where you interact with the AI, lets you choose how much effort Claude puts into addressing any query.

      With Opus 4.8, there are five effort levels to choose from: Low, Medium, High (Default), Extra, and Max. As the names imply, low effort responses are quicker, making them suitable for basic questions, email drafts, or any requests that prioritize speed over analysis.

      Conversely, the High and Max settings prompt Claude to engage in more thorough thinking before replying. These levels of effort are best for complicated multi-step issues, in-depth analysis, or comparisons, and for scenarios where precision is more crucial than quick responses. However, because these settings require more time for Claude to respond, they can deplete your rate limits more quickly.

      This control feature is accessible on all plans. Previously, you could only input a prompt, select the AI model based on its known capabilities, and Claude would independently determine the required level of effort. Effort control, however, places that decision-making power in your hands.

      What other changes have occurred?

      The most notable practical enhancement for developers is the introduction of dynamic workflows. Claude Code can now organize a large task, launch hundreds of parallel subagents within a single session, and validate its own outputs before returning results.

      The Messages API has been updated to accept system entries within the messages array, allowing developers to modify Claude’s instructions during a task without disrupting the prompt cache. This proves particularly useful for adjusting permissions, token budgets, or environmental context.

      Anthropic also indicates that Opus 4.8 is about four times less likely than its earlier version to overlook errors in code. This update comes 41 days after Opus 4.7, showcasing an increased frequency of updates.
