Instagram Plus might appeal to creators, but WhatsApp Plus is easier to overlook.
Meta appears to believe that some users will be willing to pay a few dollars monthly for added controls, customization, and visibility within its key applications. After conducting initial tests of these subscriptions with select user groups, the company is now rolling out the concept globally across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
Meta's Plus plans are going global.
The plans are individually priced, with Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus at $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus is slightly cheaper at $2.99 per month. Fortunately, the free versions of these apps will remain available. Users can continue to post, message, call, and scroll without a subscription.
Instagram Plus is mainly targeted toward users who frequently post Stories and desire greater control over them. Paying users can access the total number of Story rewatches, create additional audience lists beyond Close Friends, extend the lifespan of Stories (beyond the usual 24 hours), and highlight one Story each week for increased visibility. They can also browse through Story viewers, view another person's Story without appearing in the viewer list, and post to their profile or highlights without notifying their followers.
Additionally, there are some cosmetic features such as customized app icons, profile bio fonts, animated Super Heart reactions, and additional profile pins. Facebook Plus offers a similar experience, providing extra social and personalization tools for users wanting more control over their presentation on the platform.
WhatsApp Plus remains an easy option to bypass.
WhatsApp Plus focuses more on personalizing the app rather than adding essential features. For $2.99 per month, users can send premium stickers with special effects, select unique app themes and icons, pin up to 20 chats, and set premium ringtones for significant contacts.
The customization list feature may be the most noteworthy WhatsApp Plus benefit. Subscribers can create distinct lists for work, family, friends, or groups, assigning each its own alert tone, ringtone, and theme. For those who receive numerous messages throughout the day, this could prove beneficial, as they could identify whether they received a work message, family update, or casual chat just by the sound.
However, the question remains whether a custom tone is enough value to justify the $2.99 monthly fee. Instagram Plus has a more defined audience in creators looking to expand their reach, while WhatsApp Plus appears to be much easier to overlook for now.
