The Hulu app is on the verge of being discontinued, and you may soon find its collection available on Disney+.
Hulu might be on the brink of disappearance from the streaming landscape. Although the Hulu app is operational for now, Disney could be subtly encouraging users to use it less. Disney’s streaming technology teams are developing a multi-phase initiative called Project Gemini, which intends to incorporate more of Hulu's content and features into Disney+.
Reports suggest that this unified experience is anticipated to be completed by year-end, according to a leaked internal document and insights from two streaming industry employees. However, Disney has informed Business Insider that there are “no current plans to retire” the standalone Hulu app.
This isn’t the first time such information has surfaced, and it appears to be just a matter of time before something changes.
How Hulu is being further integrated into Disney+
Disney has been gradually merging Hulu into Disney+ for some time now. In 2023, the company introduced Hulu access for Disney+ bundle subscribers, allowing them to utilize Hulu’s library via a specific Hulu hub within the Disney+ app. At that time, Disney indicated that this was aimed at enhancing user experience and increasing engagement.
This seems to be a further step in that integration process. Earlier this month, Disney announced that select Hulu subscribers could connect their Hulu profiles to Disney+, which allows them to transfer their watch history, watchlists, and recommendations. Disney stated that eligible Hulu subscribers could log into Disney+ using their MyDisney credentials to stream Hulu content at no additional cost, although standalone Hulu access remains available for the time being.
Why the Hulu app appears unnecessary now
The internal document suggests that the Hulu technology framework and app will be phased out once users transition to Disney+. Three senior technology employees at Disney reportedly mentioned that resources are being reallocated away from Hulu and that new major features are no longer being introduced to the standalone app.
A seasoned Hulu product employee shared with Business Insider that Hulu is on “life support” with no ongoing development, while another software engineer noted that maintaining two separate systems is no longer practical. As a result, we can expect Hulu features to gradually shift to Disney+ as the standalone Hulu app is slowly retired.
