Google Health's challenging acquisition of Fitbit is already resulting in a significant cleanup strategy.
Google is seeking to alleviate frustrations regarding its revamped Google Health app, which has taken the place of Fitbit and is now accessible to both Android and iOS users in version 5.0.
The first fix is simple yet significant. Runs that were categorized as general workouts for some users are set to be corrected this week, with run splits being incorporated into summaries.
This presents Google with an initial challenge it cannot avoid. The company has stated it will continue to update its public list as modifications are implemented, with the summer rollout prioritizing tracking accuracy, sleep data, nutrition logs, Coach responses, sharing capabilities, and account migrations.
Why workout issues are prioritized for repairs
Exercise tracking is where the update plan becomes most tangible. Google is enhancing map loading times and making maps easier to locate in exercise summaries, which should streamline the review of recorded workouts afterward.

The company is also focusing on improving export reliability across various tracking systems. This includes addressing TCX export issues related to Fitbit Air, connected GPS, and exercises logged via multiple devices or applications linked to Google Health.
A health app can manage without a minor convenience feature. However, it struggles to recover when basic activity history appears unreliable, particularly for former Fitbit users who anticipate a run to be accurately represented.
How daily tracking will improve
Updates for sleep, nutrition, and Coach all aim to ease user concerns regarding the clarity of health data recording and explanation. Google is rectifying absent Sleep Scores in certain app sections, adding a 24-hour sleep view that integrates main sleep and naps, and improving the accessibility of nap data from current and previous days.
Nutrition will also receive specific adjustments. Proposed changes include eliminating duplicate logs when the same third-party app is connected in various ways, correcting meal types from MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, and LoseIt, as well as fixing errors in energy expenditure reported by Pixel Watch users.
Google
Coach features in that enhancement effort because poor timing or unclear responses can make the app seem overwhelming rather than beneficial. Google intends to introduce shorter, more visual messages in the Today tab, alongside better recall of instructions, fewer irrelevant non-responses, and increased support for logging in Ask Coach.
What Google needs to demonstrate next
Google is gearing up Health for more extensive data-sharing capabilities. Features such as Apple Health sharing, Smart Health Links for medical records, and support for tools like command line interfaces and AI functionalities are all outlined in the roadmap.
These features elevate the standards for execution. An app that manages workouts, food logs, sleep summaries, and medical records must ensure that routine information feels consistent before users entrust it with more sensitive data.
For now, the focus should be on execution. If the fixes for mislabeled workouts and run splits are implemented smoothly this week, Google will have a stronger foundation for the larger summer rollout.
