Google Health's challenging acquisition of Fitbit is already prompting a significant cleanup strategy.
Google is working to alleviate frustration regarding its revamped Google Health app, which has taken the place of Fitbit and is now accessible to Android and iOS users in version 5.0.
The first fix is straightforward but essential. Runs that were categorized as general workouts for some users are set to be corrected this week, with run splits being added to the summaries.
This presents an early challenge that Google cannot avoid. The company has stated that it will continue to update its public list as changes are implemented, with the summer rollout concentrating on tracking precision, sleep data, nutrition logs, Coach interactions, sharing features, and account migration.
Why workouts are prioritized for fixes
Exercise tracking is where the update plan becomes most tangible. Google is enhancing map loading speeds and simplifying the accessibility of maps within exercise summaries, making it easier for users to review recorded workouts later.
Google
The company is also focusing on improving export reliability across various tracking configurations. This includes addressing TCX export issues related to Fitbit Air, connected GPS, and tracked exercises from multiple devices or applications connected to Google Health.
A health app can manage without certain convenience features, but it struggles to regain user trust when basic activity history feels unreliable, particularly for former Fitbit users who expect a run to be accurately represented.
How daily tracking is being improved
Updates for sleep, nutrition, and Coach all respond to user concerns about the clarity of health data recording and explanation. Google is fixing missing Sleep Scores in various app sections, adding a 24-hour sleep view that combines primary sleep and naps, and making it easier to locate nap records from current and previous days.
Nutrition will also see its own adjustments. Planned changes include eliminating duplicate logs when the same third-party app is connected through multiple methods, correcting meal classifications from MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, and LoseIt, and fixing the overestimation of energy burned for Pixel Watch users.
Google
Coach updates are included in this refinement process, as poorly timed or vague responses can make the app feel cluttered rather than helpful. Google intends to provide shorter, more visual messages in the Today tab, improve recall of instructions, reduce unnecessary non-responses, and enhance logging support in Ask Coach.
What Google needs to demonstrate next
Google is gearing up Health for more substantial data-sharing capabilities. Upcoming features include Apple Health sharing, Smart Health Links for medical records, and support for tools like command line interfaces and AI capabilities.
These features elevate the expectations for execution. An app that manages workouts, food logs, sleep summaries, and medical records must ensure that routine information is consistent before users will trust it with more sensitive data.
For now, the key focus is on execution. If the fixes for mislabeled workouts and run splits are delivered effectively this week, Google will have a stronger foundation for the broader summer rollout.
