The PlayStation State of Play is back on June 2, featuring Marvel’s Wolverine as the highlight of the event.
Sony confirms over 60 minutes of PS5 game reveals and announcements
The Summer Game Fest season is officially getting underway, and Sony is eager to make its presence felt this year. The company has announced that the next PlayStation State of Play showcase will take place on June 2, featuring more than 60 minutes of updates and announcements for PS5 games. One of the major highlights confirmed so far is Marvel’s Wolverine, which Sony promises will be revealed in a new light during the event.
Sony announces Wolverine showcase for June 2 State of Play
According to Sony's official statement, the showcase will spotlight upcoming PS5 titles from both PlayStation Studios and third-party collaborators. Although the complete lineup remains mostly undisclosed, multiple reports indicate that Wolverine is set to be the main attraction. Therefore, fans can expect to get a new glimpse of its “brutal and relentless” combat system.
Insomniac Games
The scheduling and magnitude of this State of Play make perfect sense. Recently, Sony has attracted attention after reports suggested they are stepping back from delivering major single-player exclusives for PC, indicating a renewed emphasis on console leadership. Following a showcase many fans hailed as “unforgettable” back in February, an hour-long State of Play just days before Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest perfectly positions PlayStation to remind everyone why PS5 exclusives are still at the forefront of discussions.
State of Play season ignites peak gaming enthusiasm
What has the gaming community abuzz is how unusually early Sony announced this State of Play. Typically, the company leaves little time for fans to prepare before a showcase goes live, so revealing a full hour-long event nearly two weeks ahead has quickly set Reddit and X into a humorous frenzy.
Naughty Dog
In addition to Wolverine, fans are anxiously awaiting gameplay from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, updates on Marvel Tokon, insights into what Sony Santa Monica is secretly developing next, and possibly even a release date for Kena 2. Meanwhile, the more hopeful segment of the community is already speculating that Final Fantasy VII Part 3 might make an unexpected appearance, as it seems expectations are no longer constrained by reality.
Naturally, no PlayStation hype cycle is complete without a touch of whimsy. Some fans are humorously bracing for another PS Plus price hike announcement, while others are once again invoking the longstanding wish for a “Bloodborne Remaster” as if it has become an annual tradition. Curiously, despite no indication that Rockstar will be involved, speculation about a GTA VI trailer has also seeped into discussions surrounding State of Play, as gamers have been without new footage for over a year. Ultimately, Sony does require a compelling showcase at this point, particularly with Xbox aggressively promoting Game Pass, launching multiplatform games, and generating excitement for Forza Horizon 6 as we progress into the latter half of the year.
Nonetheless, this whirlwind of excitement likely serves a purpose. Sony has already confirmed special live State of Play screenings at Alamo Drafthouse theaters across the US, and companies typically don’t rent out theaters just to announce a couple of indie remasters and a new controller color. Therefore, whatever PlayStation has in store for June 2, Sony evidently believes it's significant enough to coax fans out of their homes and into actual seats. Let's hope the event lives up to the hype.
