Plex aims to push its users into a subscription entrapment, and to be honest, it frustrates me a bit.
The best streaming deal has suddenly tripled in price overnight.
I have been a dedicated Plex user for quite some time, and I truly appreciate what the app offers. However, after seeing their recent announcement, I had to pause and process the news. Plex is increasing the price of its Lifetime Plex Pass from $249.99 to $749.99 effective July 1, 2026.
This isn’t just a minor price hike; it’s a staggering 200% increase, and the way they've presented it frustrates me even more. This follows a previous price rise last year, which increased the lifetime pass from $119.99 to $249.99, along with a remote pass price hike reported last month.
Is Plex attempting to steer everyone towards subscriptions?
In the announcement, Plex indicated they considered removing the Lifetime Pass altogether since recurring subscriptions are more favorable for ongoing development. They opted to keep it, but at a price that is tough for most users to rationalize.
I feel that making something unaffordable is not much different from discontinuing it. The new lifetime price of $749.99 equates to a decade of subscription payments at the current rate, which is ludicrous. It’s evident that the company is ushering new customers into the subscription model, which is frustrating.
To their credit, current Lifetime Pass holders will retain all their benefits without additional charges. The monthly and annual subscription rates remain unchanged for now. So, if you’re keen on obtaining that lifetime pass, you should act quickly.
Is there anything to look forward to?
To soften the blow of this news, Plex shared a roadmap of upcoming features with the announcement. Enhancements are coming for downloads, including organization by show and automatic downloading of new episodes.
Mobile app support for music and photo libraries is returning. Features like playlist creation, NFO metadata support, IPv6 support, and audio improvements, such as dialog enhancement, are also on the way.
It’s a decent list, and I want to acknowledge Plex for sharing it. However, a promising roadmap doesn’t make a 200% price increase any easier to accept.
If Plex is an integral part of your daily life, you have until 12:01 AM UTC on July 1 to secure the Lifetime Pass for $249.99. After that, the price will rise to $749.99, and honestly, at that rate, the subscription begins to look much more appealing, which seems to be the intention.

Spotify has introduced verified podcast badges to ensure that listeners know they are hearing from the authentic host, rather than an AI duplicate.
Following the rollout of verified artist badges for music creators, Spotify has announced its verified podcast badges, assuring listeners that they are tuned into their favorite hosts, not AI impersonators. This badge will appear as a light green checkmark on show pages and search results, indicating that the show has been validated for authenticity. Initially, not every podcast will receive the badge, as Spotify will start with selected shows and expand over the coming months.

During I/O 2026, Google revamped two primary YouTube experiences, resulting in genuinely useful updates. One of the new features, Ask YouTube, resembles an AI Mode tailored for the extensive video library on the platform. Additionally, Gemini Omni, Google's tool for “creating anything from anything,” will be available in the YouTube Shorts Remix and Create app, marking a significant announcement for creators. However, while Omni is currently free, Ask YouTube is restricted behind a paywall.
Google is set to release Project Aura smart glasses, developed in collaboration with Xreal, later this year.
Google is developing several smart glasses, with the first model running on Samsung's Android XR platform expected to launch around July. The most intriguing of these is the Xreal Project Aura smart glasses, which feature full hand gesture control and mixed reality views for Android apps accessible through the Play Store. First introduced in December 2025, Xreal confirmed today that Project Aura smart glasses will be available for purchase in 2026.
