The Apple Watch may soon introduce a new feature for sensing blood pressure.
Apple's new blood pressure notification feature is currently under FDA review.
Apple Watches already provide hypertension notifications, but the tech giant is reportedly developing a new blood pressure-related feature that goes beyond the existing alert system.
According to Digitimes, this high blood pressure notification feature is being evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. However, this wording is somewhat complex, as Apple introduced hypertension notifications back in September 2025 with watchOS 26. This feature is compatible with Apple Watch Series 9 and newer, as well as Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Ultra 3, in certain regions.
How will blood pressure alerts function?
It remains unclear how this new blood pressure feature will differ from what Apple currently offers. The report indicates that the anticipated high-end 2026 watch, presumably the upcoming Watch Ultra 4, may undergo a redesign and incorporate enhanced health sensors. If true, this would be the first significant health sensor upgrade for the Apple Watch since the Series 8. The new blood pressure feature could rely on this upgraded hardware, but that is merely speculation at this time.
Apple's existing hypertension notifications are intended more as an early warning mechanism than a diagnostic tool. This feature monitors trends over a 30-day span and alerts users if it identifies indications of chronic high blood pressure. It received FDA approval in September 2025. Apple states that the feature utilizes heart sensor data and machine learning, but it does not measure blood pressure directly or serve as a substitute for a medical-grade cuff.
What might follow?
Apple's aspirations in the health sector extend beyond blood pressure. The company has also been associated with noninvasive blood glucose monitoring for several years, a concept that would utilize light-based sensors to estimate glucose levels without the need for a finger prick or blood sample. However, achieving accuracy in a smartwatch format is quite challenging, so for now, the forthcoming blood pressure notifications appear to be a more feasible next step for the Apple Watch.
