Startled by the MacBook Neo, Asus showcases budget-friendly Intel Wildcat Lake laptops.
Asus has unveiled its new Intel Wildcat Lake Vivobook 14SE and 16SE laptops in China, jumping ahead of Apple in the affordable laptop arena. This offers Windows manufacturers an early opportunity to challenge Apple on pricing and hardware features.
The Vivobook 16SE poses the most significant competition, starting at CNY 4,599 (approximately $675), with a premium display version priced at CNY 4,999 (around $734). The upgraded model is equipped with a 16-inch 2560 x 1600 display featuring a 144Hz refresh rate, variable refresh rate support, and a brightness of 400 nits.
This positions Asus favorably against the MacBook Neo before Apple’s more budget-friendly laptop gains visibility.
What screen advantage does Apple lose?
The Vivobook 16SE provides Asus with a clear opportunity. Its enhanced IPS panel affords higher resolution compared to the base model, supplemented by the smoother experience offered by the 144Hz refresh rate.
For consumers, the choice is straightforward. While Apple has its ecosystem advantages, Asus can present a larger and faster display at an attractive launch price. If global pricing aligns closely with the Chinese market, it will become increasingly difficult to overlook this edge.
How does Wildcat Lake increase rivalry?
The inclusion of the Intel Core i5 320 processor in both Vivobook models adds to the competitive pressure. Asus is introducing Wildcat Lake to mainstream users early, enabling the Vivobook 14SE and 16SE to feature a more current chip without venturing into premium pricing.
The remaining specifications are practical, featuring 16GB of RAM, 512GB of PCIe 4.0 storage, dual USB-C 3.2 ports with power delivery, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, and a headphone jack. For many users, this means fewer adapters and a more familiar setup compared to Apple’s minimalist design.
When will this become a serious competition?
Currently, Asus has only launched these Vivobooks in China. The company is expected to provide information regarding global launch and availability, but the pricing outside China is still unknown.
This pricing will determine the level of threat. While Apple can still rely on macOS, battery efficiency, and ecosystem loyalty, Asus is making the entry-level comparison increasingly challenging. The next key factor to observe is whether these configurations will be available internationally without losing their competitive pricing advantage.
