Microsoft has announced that new Surface laptops featuring Snapdragon X2 chips will be released later this year.

Microsoft's announcement of Snapdragon X2 Surface models alongside the launch of Intel ones presents an unusual approach to marketing a premium laptop, but it reflects a transparent recognition that the superior product isn't ready yet.

Microsoft unveiled the latest Surface Laptop and Surface Pro today, and as a minor note at the end of the press release, indicated that additional versions are forthcoming.

While the Intel Core Ultra 3 models are currently available for business customers, the Snapdragon X2 variants, which Microsoft claims will provide “up to 80% faster local AI inferencing,” are set to be released later this year.

In their official blog post, Microsoft stated, “Later this year, we will extend the Surface for Business portfolio with models featuring the Snapdragon X2 processors.”

However, no pricing or detailed specifications were provided, aside from the 80% AI inference assertion and a vague assurance of “uncompromising battery life.”

According to Windows Central, the delay is attributed to component availability, with high demand for the chips extending the timeline by several months. Moreover, the report notes that “Microsoft isn’t ready to ship the consumer models just yet,” possibly to prioritize the business line.

What significance does the Snapdragon X2 version hold?

One key factor is the price. Although the Intel models are genuinely fast, they target business customers with a starting cost of $1,499, while the Snapdragon X2 variant is expected to cater more to consumers.

To enhance the appeal of the consumer models featuring Snapdragon X2, Microsoft is reportedly considering optional OLED displays, which would be a first for the Surface line, though this has not yet been confirmed.

The same source previously indicated that Microsoft plans to use only two chips from the Snapdragon X2 range: X2 Plus and X2 Elite. Details on the upcoming Snapdragon-powered Surface lineup remain sparse, with further information anticipated.
