Apple's iOS 27 may introduce AI writing features, an upgraded Siri, and personalized wallpapers.
Apple is gearing up for a significant expansion of its AI capabilities for iPhones and iPads with the introduction of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, according to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This update is anticipated to include AI-driven writing assistance, natural-language app shortcuts, enhanced Siri functionality, and even AI-generated wallpapers, as Apple aims to keep pace with competitors like Google and Samsung in the consumer AI arena.
These new features are likely to be revealed at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, ahead of a public launch later this year.
Apple aims to integrate AI more seamlessly into daily iPhone usage.
The report suggests that one of the most significant enhancements in iOS 27 will be improved AI writing tools. Apple is reportedly developing a grammar-checking function akin to Grammarly that can recommend edits, corrections, and rewrites directly within text fields throughout the system. This tool is expected to present a translucent interface, displaying the original text alongside AI-generated modifications. Users should be able to accept specific changes, approve all suggestions, or disregard them altogether.
Siri
Additionally, Apple is said to be testing a new "Write With Siri" feature built into the keyboard. Another functionality, dubbed "Help Me Write," might activate when users use Siri while typing.
The more substantial change could be Apple's revamp of the Shortcuts app, enabling users to create automations merely by articulating their requests in natural language rather than constructing commands manually. For instance, users may instruct Siri to automatically summarize PDFs, manage calendars, or initiate smart home actions without the need to set up workflows themselves.
Apple is still striving to keep up in the AI realm.
The timing of these enhancements is crucial, as Apple faces increasing pressure to react to swift AI developments from Google, Samsung, OpenAI, and Microsoft. Google recently unveiled new AI functionalities for Android, such as AI-generated widgets, contextual task management, and advanced voice interactions powered by Gemini Intelligence.
Apple's approach to AI has been more cautious and slower compared to many of its rivals. While the company remains focused on privacy and on-device processing, critics have argued that Siri and Apple Intelligence still fall short of contemporary AI assistants in terms of conversational abilities and adaptability.
The report also notes Apple's ongoing efforts to redesign Siri to provide better app control and visual analysis through the camera app.
Another feature expected in iOS 27 is AI-generated wallpapers. Apple is reportedly incorporating generative wallpaper creation into the existing Image Playground framework, which would enable users to generate custom home and lock screen backgrounds from prompts.
What lies ahead
Apple is expected to officially unveil iOS 27 and its AI functionalities during WWDC in June, with developer beta testing likely commencing shortly thereafter.
Apple's larger challenge will be to persuade users that its AI ecosystem can rival those of competitors that have already developed more advanced chatbot-like assistants and automation tools. However, if Apple manages to embed these features deeply within iOS rather than presenting them as standalone applications, it could carve out a unique position through stronger ecosystem integration and privacy-conscious design.
For the time being, iOS 27 seems to focus less on flashy AI presentations and more on making routine iPhone tasks feel smarter, quicker, and more automated.
