The anime adaptation of Ghost in the Shell has been given a release date, and I’m really looking forward to it.
The new Ghost in the Shell anime by Science Saru is set to be a true adaptation of Masamune Shirow's original manga.
If you've been anticipating a Ghost in the Shell anime that genuinely embodies the spirit of the original manga, there's exciting news. Science Saru has announced that a new Ghost in the Shell anime will debut on July 7, 2026, with a trailer released alongside the announcement.
The series will be available for streaming worldwide on Amazon Prime Video, with Japan enjoying exclusive early access. Prior to the global launch, the first two episodes will be showcased at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France from June 21 to 27, where the creative team will also participate in discussions about the project.
What is The Ghost in the Shell anime about?
Set in 2029, the narrative follows Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg leading an elite combat unit. Alongside Daisuke Aramaki from the Ministry of Home Affairs, they establish Public Security Section 9, or Shell Squad, tasked with combatting cybercrimes and international conspiracies. A shadowy hacker known as the Puppet Master lurks behind the scenes.
This adaptation appears to differentiate itself from previous versions.
What excites me the most about this adaptation is how it stands apart. Every earlier Ghost in the Shell rendition, including the acclaimed 1995 film, Stand Alone Complex, and the 2017 live-action film starring Scarlett Johansson, took considerable creative liberties with Shirow's manga.
The 1995 movie concentrated heavily on AI and consciousness, while Stand Alone Complex made closer adaptations but still implemented notable changes, such as replacing the Fuchikomas with Tachikomas.
Science Saru, the studio responsible for Dandadan and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, is behind the Ghost in the Shell anime. Judging by the visuals shown so far, the new anime closely resembles the manga in character designs, hardware, and overall vibe.
Given the studio's history of faithful manga adaptations, including Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! and Inu-Oh, there is a strong belief they can execute this project well. For years, it was deemed that a true adaptation of Shirow’s manga was impossible, but Science Saru seems poised to challenge that notion this July.

In other news, Westworld is being rebooted as a movie with Jurassic Park writer David Koepp involved.
A new Westworld film is in the works at Warner Bros. with screenwriter David Koepp tasked with creating a new feature film adaptation of Michael Crichton's classic 1973 science fiction thriller. A significant director is also apparently interested in the project, although no names have been released yet (according to Deadline).

In another update, Wordle is set to become a TV show on NBC, which already feels like a betrayal to fans.
Wordle will transform into a primetime game show on NBC in 2027. Each morning, millions engage with Wordle, facing a blank grid and quietly battling to guess a five-letter word. There’s no host narrating the process, no audience reacting to wrong guesses, and absolutely no one cheering for you—just the player, the word, and the quiet triumph of solving it in under three tries.
Moreover, Samsung is facing a lawsuit from pop star Dua Lipa over its television box designs.
Samsung is now dealing with legal troubles involving Dua Lipa's likeness on TV boxes. The pop star has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics America and Samsung Electronics Co. in California federal court, alleging copyright infringement, trademark violations, and infringement of her publicity rights. The lawsuit claims Samsung used a copyrighted image of Lipa on cardboard packaging for its TVs without permission.
