Perplexity's AI answering engine will not be available on Snapchat, after all.
Perplexity is no longer integrating with Snapchat chats
Snapchat’s intended integration with Perplexity has been canceled. In its Q1 2026 investor letter, Snap disclosed that both companies "amicably ended the relationship in Q1," putting an end to a $400 million cash and equity agreement that was announced last November.
This partnership would have integrated Perplexity’s AI answering engine directly into Snapchat’s Chat feature, allowing users to ask questions and receive conversational, source-backed responses without leaving the app. Snap had previously indicated that this collaboration would begin contributing to revenue in 2026, but their current sales forecast no longer anticipates any contributions from Perplexity.
The question arises: Are AI searches necessary in every chat application?
The cancellation occurs as technology companies widely implement AI assistants in their applications. Meta has introduced Meta AI across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, while Google is integrating Gemini into Search, Android, Gmail, and other services.
Snapchat appeared to follow a similar path with Perplexity. With millions of daily users engaging in conversations, planning, and sharing content, incorporating a chatbot seemed beneficial. However, difficulties emerged in February when the company stated that a broader rollout plan with Perplexity had not yet been mutually agreed upon. Furthermore, the deal raised concerns about how AI search would function in private messaging, particularly for younger audiences and sensitive subjects.
Is Snapchat still utilizing AI?
Despite the termination of the Perplexity agreement, Snapchat is not distancing itself from AI technology. The company recently rolled out AI Sponsored Snaps, a new ad format that allows brands to embed interactive AI chatbots in Chat. Therefore, chatbot-style interactions may still be found in Snapchat, albeit through advertisements rather than Perplexity search.
Snap is also enhancing its Snap Map features. The new Place Loyalty function assesses users based on their visitation frequency to certain locations over the past year, assigning them Gold, Silver, or Bronze status levels. Snap assures that these rankings are private and that location sharing remains disabled by default.
The company continues to grow, with its Q1 report indicating a 5% year-over-year increase in global daily active users, reaching 483 million, while monthly active users climbed 5% to 965 million. Snap attributes this growth to features across Snap Map, Lenses, and other sections of the app.
