Nintendo has finally joined Sony and Microsoft in adjusting its prices, having held off longer due to a pricing crisis driven by AI.

Recently, the company announced updated pricing for its Switch 2 console and online gaming services across several major markets, including the US.

In the United States, customers will soon see a price increase of $50 for the handheld console. The new prices will take effect on September 1, 2026, in the US, Canada, and Europe (per CNBC). If you have been considering purchasing the portable gaming device, you have less than four months to buy it at the initial price.

In the US, the price for the Switch 2 will rise from $449.99 to $499.99. For Europe, the increase is €30, bringing the price to €499.99, while Canadian consumers will pay $679.99, up from $629.99.

Japan will experience the earliest price change, starting May 25, 2026, with a rise from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980. Other models, such as the OLED version, standard Switch, and Switch Lite, will also see increases of around ¥10,000 each.

Additionally, the pricing for Nintendo Switch Online memberships will increase as well, effective July 1, 2026, in Japan.

Nintendo explained the rationale behind the price increases, stating, “In response to shifts in market conditions and considering the global business outlook, Nintendo will be adjusting the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the Nintendo Switch 2 system and Nintendo Switch systems.” The company noted that the effects of various market changes are expected to last over the medium to long term, with similar revisions planned for markets outside Japan as well.

Nintendo isn’t alone in facing this challenge; companies like Asus, MSI, and Lenovo have also raised prices on their handheld gaming devices recently. Most notably, Lenovo’s Legion Go 2 console received a 50% price increase in April this year.

In gaming news, Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in development at Rockstar Games for an extended period. The costs associated with producing this highly anticipated title are substantial. According to a recent Business Insider profile featuring Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, while he didn’t disclose the exact production expenses, he confirmed that “it was expensive.” Analysts speculate that the total development costs could be between $1 billion and $1.5 billion.

Turning to the Mortal Kombat franchise, NetherRealm is already working on another installment following Mortal Kombat 1. In a Collider interview, Ed Boon indicated that the team is "definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game," signifying that the series is still vibrant. While the studio has outlined its direction, specific details such as the title, launch window, platforms, character roster, and storyline have not yet been revealed.

In an exploration of the gaming landscape, the year 2026 marks the arrival of OLED technology on desks everywhere. While OLED is celebrated as the top display technology, many gamers have hesitated to make the leap to OLED monitors. Despite its remarkable qualities, such as deep blacks and rapid response times, the uncertainty surrounding the investment often leads to second thoughts.
