Netflix is experimenting with its own voice search functionality, which appears to be less aggravating.

A new beta feature allows a select number of Netflix users to search by mood or vibe using AI voice search.

Finding something to watch on Netflix can often feel tedious. This is why Netflix has discreetly introduced a native AI-driven voice search feature to a limited audience in the US (according to The Verge).

Rather than entering a title, you simply express what you're in the mood for, and Netflix takes care of the rest. Although it’s still in beta, early feedback is promising.

How does the voice search function on Netflix actually operate?

Users who currently have access to this feature can press the Netflix button on their remote, which reveals several mood-based suggestions such as “I need a good cry” or “watch in the background.”

There’s also an “Ask” button that initiates the AI voice search. You can converse naturally, and Netflix provides recommendations displayed as text on the screen. However, there is no voice output from Netflix.

A Reddit user who discovered this feature on a Sony A80J Google TV described it as a long-awaited addition, noting that it functioned well right from the start.

Initial testers have found it impressively accurate, even handling unconventional requests like “I had too much coffee today, what should I watch,” which resulted in recommendations for a laid-back comedy special and the Headspace Guide to Sleep.

You can refine your choices with follow-up requests such as “more unhinged” or “more bittersweet.” At this point, the voice search function on Netflix does not utilize your viewing history, so recommendations are not personalized.

Why is Netflix not using the existing search on your TV?

The feature is currently available on Chromecast with Google TV and TCL Google TV devices but is not functional on Roku or Fire TV. This is likely because Netflix prefers users to search within its app rather than being redirected to a universal search that includes results from competing services.

When using the mic button in Hulu or Disney Plus, you are typically directed to Google, Roku, or Amazon's universal search. Netflix, like YouTube, has sufficient market influence to keep the search in-house.

There is currently no information on a broader rollout, but if this beta proves successful, the era of aimlessly scrolling through Netflix may finally come to an end.

When Apple debuted its streaming service in 2019, the entertainment industry met it with cautious skepticism. Fast forward to 2026, and Apple is close to achieving an EGOT, the prestigious sweep of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, after receiving its first-ever Tony Award nominations.

The tech company has garnered 12 nominations for Schmigadoon!, a stage adaptation of its original Apple TV musical series. With prior wins for television and film, all attention is now on the June 7 ceremony to see if Apple can complete the esteemed sweep.
