1X showcases the Neo humanoid robot, which assists humans in creating more robots like itself.
A recent factory demonstration reveals 1X's Neo robot aiding human workers on the assembly line, providing insight into the company's strategy for scaling up robot production by utilizing its own machines.
1X Technologies, a Norwegian-American robotics company, has showcased what large-scale humanoid robot production entails, and the approach is notably circular. In a newly released demo, their Neo robot assists workers on the factory floor, contributing to the assembly of additional Neo units as the firm advances toward full-scale manufacturing.
Robots assisting in robot production
The demonstration features 1X’s Neo humanoid robot, a bipedal device primarily designed for home use, now entering early manufacturing processes. The footage depicts Neo performing repetitive support tasks alongside human staff, effectively integrating into the assembly workflow.
This setup illustrates 1X's production strategy at its Neo Factory, where robots work closely with humans. The company has also highlighted a vertically integrated model, focusing on in-house design and manufacturing of essential components such as motors, batteries, sensors, and structural pieces.
This comprehensive control enables 1X to make rapid advancements in both hardware and manufacturing techniques while increasing production in response to growing demand. The factory has already commenced full-scale production, with aims to deliver thousands of units following significant early interest and pre-orders.
Evolving a still-developing product
Although the demo looks refined, Neo is still in development. The robot is intended to function autonomously, but it has yet to reach that capability. Therefore, 1X is depending on human operators to guide and assist the robot with unfamiliar tasks, allowing it to learn progressively.
This learning process is vital for Neo's improvement, combining practical deployment with ongoing training. Initial versions are anticipated to gradually enhance their abilities as they gain more experience in both manufacturing and domestic settings.
With production now underway, 1X is effectively transforming Neo into both the product and part of the production process. If this model proves effective, future versions may not only assist humans in daily activities but also take a direct role in constructing the next generation of 1X robots.
