Google's ambition for your living room television now includes short-form vertical videos. The company revealed a series of updates for Google TV today, highlighted by the introduction of a dedicated “Short videos for you” section that will appear on the home screen this summer.
This new feature will be presented directly on the Google TV home screen as a tailored feed of YouTube Shorts based on your viewing history, eliminating the need to open an app.
In addition, Google TV is set to include new Dynamic Slideshows.
Can you turn off the new YouTube Shorts row on Google TV?
Google mentions that this feature will evolve to include more than just Shorts, with Instagram Reels being a possible future addition. However, at this time, only YouTube Shorts integration has been confirmed. The rollout will commence this summer exclusively for U.S. devices.
What may raise concerns among Google TV users is the absence of a confirmed method to hide or disable the short-video row. Additionally, Google has not clarified how advertisements in this feed will be managed or if they will be subject to parental controls.
To me, this integration seems to prioritize expanding advertising opportunities rather than enhancing convenience. Featuring a Shorts feed on the home screen introduces ads right into your living space, a domain traditionally occupied by broadcast and cable television. However, I wouldn't classify the lack of opt-out options as a deliberate strategy.
