Playlist folders have been a feature of Spotify's desktop app since 2010, meaning mobile users have waited 16 years for this. A Reddit user was the first to notice that the feature had been activated on iOS, and others in the same thread confirmed it was also available on Android.
How do Spotify playlist folders function on mobile?
To begin, tap the “+” icon in your Library, and you'll now see a new Folder option in the menu. Here, you can name your folder and start adding playlists to it.
This feature also allows you to play all the contents of a folder at once, either sequentially or on shuffle. This functionality is particularly useful for long commutes or gym workouts when you want some variety without switching between playlists manually.
The timing of this rollout is fitting, especially since Spotify has been promoting its Prompted playlists recently. These playlists tend to accumulate quickly and clutter your library. Folders provide a tidy way to manage everything without needing to use the desktop app.
Are there any restrictions on Spotify’s mobile playlist folders?
We haven't yet seen the feature in our Spotify apps. Based on discussions on Reddit, playlists can be moved into folders, but not entire albums. Custom folder cover art is also not supported at this time. Additionally, since this is a server-side rollout, not everyone will have access to the option simultaneously. If you haven't seen it yet, patience is currently the only solution.
