      Microsoft is launching a beneficial feature for Office users this week. The company has introduced Agent Mode in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, a more advanced version of the Copilot experience that Microsoft refers to as "vibe working."

      This experience is now the standard for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers. It is also accessible to those on Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans.

      What is Agent Mode in Microsoft Copilot, and how does it differ?

      Previously, Copilot within Office applications has primarily functioned as a passive assistant. It could respond to inquiries but struggled to take direct actions within your documents.

      Sumit Chauhan, President of the Office Product Group at Microsoft, recognized this limitation. She mentioned that when Copilot was initially launched, the underlying AI models weren't advanced enough to directly command the applications.

      Over the past year, these models have significantly improved in following instructions and executing multi-step reasoning. Agent Mode leverages these enhancements and can now perform complex edits while preserving your original intent.

      What capabilities does Copilot Agent Mode have in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint?

      It can do quite a lot. A sidebar displays every step Copilot takes in real time, ensuring you're always aware of what changes are being made. In Word, it can draft, rewrite, restructure, and modify tone. In Excel, it allows changes directly in your workbook, incorporating formulas, tables, and visuals to transform raw data into actionable insights.

      In PowerPoint, it can refresh existing presentations with updated information while adhering to your company's template style. Early data from Microsoft reveals that engagement in Excel increased by 67%, satisfaction climbed by 65%, and new user retention rose by 50%.

      Microsoft indicates that advanced editing for complex workflows and improved transparency concerning changes are forthcoming. The company has been implementing several initiatives related to Copilot lately, such as launching smarter research tools in Copilot Cowork and enhancing its functionality in Windows 11 apps, reaffirming its role as a serious productivity tool.
