A new smart pillow could help deaf individuals avoid sleeping through emergencies
Researchers at Nottingham Trent University have created an innovative smart pillow sleeve aimed at assisting deaf users in waking up to critical nighttime alerts. Unlike conventional smart pillows, this design features a sleeve that fits over a standard pillow, slipping inside a regular pillowcase and vibrating in response to connected alarms or phone calls.
What issue does it address?
The initiative was inspired by input from members of the Deaf community, who expressed that current under-pillow alert devices tend to be too bulky and uncomfortable for restful sleep. In response, the researchers developed a thinner electronic textile sleeve that embeds four miniature haptic actuators within a yarn-like framework.
Each actuator measures a mere 3.4mm by 12.7mm, and the electronics are designed to be unobtrusive, so users shouldn’t feel them while sleeping. This makes the safety device both practical and comfortable.
Potential lifesaving capabilities
The sleeve connects to a smartphone via a microcontroller, allowing it to wirelessly link to household alarms. When an alarm activates, the pillow vibrates strongly enough to wake the user, utilizing distinct patterns to indicate various alerts. This enables users with hearing impairments to be informed of a fire alarm, a burglar alarm, or an incoming phone call.
This additional functionality enhances the product's thoughtfulness. The aim is to wake users while also providing enough context for them to understand the reason for their awakening.
The researchers indicate that the yarn used in the sleeve has successfully undergone durability testing, including multiple washes, indicating their intention to develop this as a genuine product rather than merely a lab demonstration. This work was showcased at the ACM CHI conference in Barcelona, and the team is now seeking an industrial partner to help launch it commercially. Tech Xplore also notes supervisor Theo Hughes-Riley’s mention of it being a significant advancement toward more inclusive emergency alert systems for deaf and deaf-blind individuals.
