Fall Detection is a fantastic feature of smartwatches, but Google is prioritizing "account first!"
Google's Pixel Watch safety feature currently operates without the need for an account, but this workaround may be coming to an end soon.
Fall Detection is one of the key advantages of wearing a smartwatch, particularly for users seeking a safety feature that requires minimal setup.
However, it seems Google is preparing to impose restrictions on the Pixel Watch. Recent app code discoveries suggest that signing in with a Google account will soon be necessary to continue using this feature.
At present, users of the Pixel Watch can still activate Fall Detection without linking any account. An APK teardown by Android Authority indicates that the latest version of the Pixel Watch app includes code hinting at new notifications urging users to log into Personal Safety to maintain access to Fall Detection.
These code strings also imply that Google might implement a grace period before cutting off access, although the exact duration remains unspecified. This suggests that a feature currently available on the watch may soon become contingent on account status.
Evidence from the app
The most compelling evidence lies in the wording Google seems to be incorporating into the app. New messages indicate a future scenario in which users without an account will see a countdown and be prompted to connect Personal Safety to a Google account.
This development appears more likely to signify an upcoming policy change rather than a mere possibility.
There is, however, a practical benefit to this shift. Once the watch is linked to an account, Fall Detection settings can be synced across devices, making it easier to manage the feature over time, though it also reinforces Google's ecosystem integration.
Importance of the change
This change is significant because Fall Detection constitutes a fundamental aspect of a smartwatch's value, particularly for individuals purchasing one for older relatives or anyone who needs emergency assistance with minimal effort.
Enforcing a sign-in requirement alters this dynamic. Most purchasers of the Pixel Watch might not mind since they are already logged in during the setup process.
Yet for those who appreciated the simpler setup option, this would eliminate one of the more user-friendly aspects of the current experience.
What's next to watch for
There is no confirmation yet that Google has implemented these changes. The findings stem from a code teardown, and not all in-progress developments make it to release.
Nevertheless, the messaging appears sufficiently developed that Pixel Watch users should prepare for this change to become official unless Google alters its plans.
The main question remaining is the timing. Google has yet to clarify how long the grace period will last or when enforcement will begin.
Until further information is available, the safest interpretation is that Fall Detection may soon be another Pixel Watch feature that operates best—or exclusively—when signed into an account.
