What’s the truth behind the absence of MagSafe on the iPhone Fold?
Recent leaks have clarified the situation.
Apple's foldable iPhone rumors have resurfaced, and this time it’s not the design that is causing a stir, but rather the speculation surrounding a seemingly absent feature… which might actually still be included. Yes, we’re referring to the "missing MagSafe" narrative.
Concerns about MagSafe may have been exaggerated
When the initial dummy units of the iPhone Fold were leaked, many observed an unusual detail: the absence of a visible MagSafe ring on the rear. This quickly led to speculation that Apple might entirely eliminate the feature for the foldable model.
However, that assumption didn’t hold strong. Dummy units are merely prototypes designed to illustrate size and proportions, lacking internal parts like coils or magnets. Therefore, expecting them to showcase MagSafe functionality was always somewhat unrealistic.
Third-party cases indicate MagSafe remains
Newer leaks are providing essential clarity. The latest leaked third-party cases for the iPhone Fold feature integrated MagSafe magnet rings, indicating that the technology is likely still part of the final design.
This makes much more sense. MagSafe is no longer just about charging; it has developed into a comprehensive ecosystem of accessories. Completely removing it from a flagship smartphone would feel regressive, particularly for a premium (and pricey) foldable iPhone.
So, it seems Apple has not abandoned MagSafe. However, integrating it remains a challenge.
The real obstacle lies in fitting MagSafe into such a slim device
This is where things become complicated. The iPhone Fold is expected to measure about 4.5mm in thickness when unfolded, meaning each half is extremely thin. For reference, that's even thinner than the iPhone Air, which is approximately 5.6mm. While this is impressive, it also presents significant spatial constraints.
Foldable devices often face difficulties with internal organization—balancing batteries, managing hinges, and accommodating displays in tight areas. Integrating a complete magnetic system alongside all of this is no simple task. Additionally, this wouldn’t be the first flagship device to be launched without magnets; the Samsung Galaxy S26 series omitted them, while the OnePlus Open lacked wireless charging altogether.
Conversely, Apple appears to be striving to achieve both: maintaining an ultra-slim design and ensuring MagSafe compatibility. At this juncture, the discussion shifts from whether MagSafe will be included to how Apple will manage to incorporate it without compromising other features.
