Samsung reveals an adorable new tabletop robot, and we’re optimistic it will become a reality.
A delightful AI companion designed for your desk reflects Samsung's vision for smarter homes, but following the delays and eventual cancellation of Ballie, it's wise to be cautious.
Samsung is once again hinting at a compact home robot, this time presenting it as a small tabletop companion that emphasizes charm and everyday practicality. Recently unveiled at Milan Design Week, the device is positioned as a friendly assistant intended to sit on your desk or countertop, assisting with basic daily tasks. While specifics are scarce, the concept aligns with Samsung’s larger initiative toward AI-enhanced home interactions.
A smaller, more amiable version of household robots
The new robot, named Project Luna, features a circular display on a swiveling base, giving it a mechanical personality reminiscent of Pixar’s Luxo Jr., complete with soft audio hints similar to Wall-E. Unlike larger, more complicated home robots, this one is designed to remain stationary, serving as a smart hub infused with personality.
Early videos indicate that it can respond to voice commands, show information, and likely connect with other smart home devices. Samsung has yet to provide a complete list of specifications, but the intent is evident. Project Luna aims to be more accessible than conventional robots, integrating into your daily life rather than disrupting it.
The design also embraces the "cute tech" trend, which may attract casual users who might not normally consider owning a home robot.
Will it reach consumers?
If this seems repetitive, it’s because Samsung has previously pursued a similar idea with Ballie. Introduced in 2020, Ballie was envisioned as a rolling home assistant capable of following individuals, managing smart home devices, and serving as a personal AI companion.
However, Ballie never reached the market. Samsung postponed the project multiple times, discreetly extending timelines before ultimately putting it on hold. Despite numerous updates and appearances at events, it did not transition from concept to a commercially viable product.
This background makes Project Luna somewhat harder to accept at face value. While it appears promising and arguably more practical than a rolling robot, Samsung has not confirmed a release date. The company has clearly stated this remains a concept, and it is uncertain if it will be available to the public or follow the same route as Ballie.
