If you've ever found yourself deep in an online search, you’re familiar with the routine. You open one tab, click on a link, open another, and before you know it, you have 14 tabs open with no clear answers.

This was one of the factors that led me to switch to Arc Browser, which provides vertically stacked tabs that are easier to handle. Interestingly, Google Chrome added this feature just last week. However, Google isn't stopping there; they are enhancing AI Mode in Chrome to address this issue effectively.

So, what changes has Google made to tackle the problem of tab overload?

The most significant update is that when you click a link in AI Mode, it no longer disrupts your search. Instead, the webpage opens next to AI Mode, allowing you to explore the site while still being able to ask follow-up questions without losing your original context.

To demonstrate this feature, Google used a shopping scenario. Imagine you're searching for a compact coffee maker that can produce a decent latte. You describe your requirements in AI Mode and start looking. Once you find a model you like and click its link, it opens directly on the right side instead of a new tab.

Now, you can ask questions such as, “How easy is this to clean?” AI Mode will gather relevant information from the page and provide you with a specific answer. No need for a new tab or starting from scratch.

This functionality is equally effective for research. For instance, if you're studying McLaren’s racing teams, you can browse McLaren’s official website while utilizing AI Mode and continuously ask questions in real-time.

I don’t believe this feature has been fully rolled out to everyone yet. I attempted to replicate the same actions, but the links still open in a new tab for me. So, if you don’t see this feature yet, it’s best to be patient as it will be available in the coming days.

What additional features come with this update?

Another significant enhancement is the capability to search across tabs, which is arguably the most exciting aspect for me. On both desktop and mobile, a new “plus” menu in the search box enables you to incorporate your currently open tabs into your AI Mode search. You can combine tabs, images, and even PDFs.

Preparing for an exam? You can add your class notes, lecture slides, and reading tabs to the search, then ask AI Mode to clarify a topic you're struggling with. It will utilize all that context to provide a customized response.

Many AI browsers, including Perplexity Comet, offer a similar cross-tab search feature, so it’s great to see Google Chrome joining this trend.
