X has just introduced a significantly improved built-in photo editor.
Posting images on X is about to become significantly less frustrating.
X is addressing one of the more inconvenient aspects of sharing images on its platform. The company’s product lead, Nikita Bier, announced the launch of a “brand new Photo Editor” within the post composer.
Bier mentioned that this update introduces “long-overdue features like drawing and texting,” providing users with a more robust editing experience instead of the limited image tools they've had up until now.
What’s new in the updated Photo Editor?
Ladies and gentlemen, we’re rolling out a completely new Photo Editor in our post composer. It includes features that we've long needed, like drawing and text. Additionally, we've added special tools unique to X: • Edit with words, powered by Grok • Blur parts of the photo for redaction… pic.twitter.com/38Zaw8b5jl— Nikita Bier (@nikitabier) April 7, 2026
The significant update to the photo editor lies in the tools it offers. X users can now draw on images, add text overlays, and blur or redact sections of a photo before posting. While these features may seem basic in 2026, they represent a significant improvement in user experience. Previously, users often had to rely on other applications for even the simplest edits when uploading screenshots, memes, or annotated images.
Thus, the enhanced photo editor does not feel like a new feature but rather an overdue improvement that brings X up to speed with what should have existed long ago.
A small update that truly makes sense
Bier has been more vocal about practical but small updates, and this one fits perfectly into that category. Rather than completely overhauling the image posting process, X is merely enhancing its capabilities. For frequent posters, particularly creators, journalists, and those sharing screenshots, having direct access to these tools within the composer is highly beneficial.
That’s not all; users can even edit images using text since the photo editor is powered by Grok. This means users can modify images with natural language prompts that extend beyond simple edits, allowing for lightweight AI image editing. It also integrates Grok more directly into the posting process rather than restricting it to a separate chatbot-like feature.
This isn't a feature that will drastically alter how people utilize X, but it is an upgrade that adds a more polished feel to the app. Currently, the rollout is live on iOS, while Android users will have to wait a bit longer. Bier did not specify an exact release date for Android, only stating that it will be available soon.
