Google is providing Chrome users with two significant upgrades for desktops, one of which has been anticipated for quite some time. The browser is now implementing support for vertical tabs along with a new fullscreen mode on desktop.
These features have been revealed by Google as enhancements aimed at simplifying the management of numerous tabs, while also creating a more orderly way to read busy webpages.
Why 'vertical tabs' are transformative for Google Chrome
As suggested by the name, vertical tabs allow your open Chrome tabs to be arranged in a vertical stack. Instead of having all tabs squeezed into the typical bar at the top, Chrome can now display them in an organized list along the left side of the window. Google notes that this arrangement makes full page titles easier to read, especially when the number of open tabs increases significantly. It also simplifies the organization of Tab Groups.
Additionally, Chrome permits users to minimize the left panel to a slimmer row of favicons, which can help maintain a tidy appearance without sacrificing much screen space. To activate this feature, just right-click the top of any Chrome window and select “Show Tabs Vertically,” with the option to revert whenever desired.
What other features are being introduced?
The second enhancement is an upgraded immersive reading mode. This feature now takes over the entire page rather than opening in a side panel, creating a more text-centered view that removes distractions from busy websites. Google describes it as a method to convert cluttered pages into a more streamlined reading experience.
To use this feature, simply right-click a page and choose “Open in reading mode,” or click the “Reading Mode” button located in the address bar. This feature is already active, although availability may initially vary.
